A writeup I did last year after one of Reddit's more severe enshittification episodes…
https://shellsharks.com/threadiversal-travel
Since then, I have not used Reddit and I continue to invest time and energy into the #threadiverse, namely #Lemmy (though I am open to trying out more platforms as they mature).
Come check out the discussions at infosec.pub! (https://infosec.pub)

The /c/cybersecurity community on Infosec.pub has new icon and banner artwork courtesy of @bolo ! It already makes the space look nicer if you ask me 🎨 😄
Go check it out and if you haven't already, join the community and start sharing and interacting! https://infosec.pub/c/cybersecurity

Wrote a “guide” to #Lemmy / #kbin last year after Reddit went full enshittify.

If you’re interested in checking out a #fediverse-based alternative to Reddit, come check out infosec.pub! It hosts a number of communities including one I’ve stood up for #cybersecurity / #infosec!

Hey #infosec / #cybersecurity folks of the #fediverse come check out the /c/cybersecurity #lemmy community @ infosec.pub (https://infosec.pub/c/cybersecurity)! We just crossed 1k subscribed!
A safe-haven for all current and ex-reddit infosec-ers. It should feel somewhat like home too, we have weekly threads for things like Mentorship Monday, Training Tuesday, What are you working on Wednesday, etc...!

@jerry would be interesting to see a report of infosec.exchange (+ all the other Jerry-galaxy instances) funding and costs breakdown. Especially if there’s a deficit or if we’re close at all to a deficit. As other properties (within your sphere, e.g. #Fedia #infosecpub) grow and costs with it, it’d be good for the community to be able to react and increase support. Maybe annual report or something… just a thought!
Personally, I think it’d be great for community contributions to not only cover server/hosting costs (with some growth surplus) but also compensate you for your time and expertise.

Wanna go full- #threadiverse ? The steps...
1. Create a #kbin or #lemmy account on an instance of your choosing (might I suggest infosec.pub?) #infosecpub
2. Download a Lemmy client (they are somewhat sparse at the moment but #memmy on iOS is what I'm using currently) if mobile scrolling is your jam
3. Reference sub.rehab, redditmigration.com or https://www.quippd.com/writing/2023/06/15/unofficial-subreddit-migration-list-lemmy-kbin-etc.html to find communities you are interested in.
4. Use the mobile client's search feature (memmy has this but your client may not) or your instances native search capability to find and subscribe to all the communities you've found from the step above. Note: you should have no issue subbing to Lemmy OR Kbin communities (/magazines)
5. Yes! You can sub to communities on other instances from your own. By doing so, you can build an aggregate feed of all your subbed communities and boom! The worry of fractured communities can be (partially imo) mitigated.
6. Scroll to your heart's content, comment on things, upvote, etc... It's VERY similar imo to my old Reddit browsing process. But with all the fun of exploring an entirely new space. I'm loving the novelty of it all and actually finding some great stuff that's out there!
Yes, there is still lots of work to be done with this software and there's no telling whether these communities will thrive into the future, but I for one am excited about the prospects and will be putting my time into it.

@smfinlay @jerry Both are a work in progress, though it seems #Fedia is attracting more people overall (which makes sense as it is “general-interest” as opposed to infosec-specific like #infosecpub. Is there something you’re interested in knowing? (I think I’m going to write something up as it seems there’s quite a bit of interest from everyone on “what am I getting myself into”) 😁

Happy Fedi-Friday! #Fedia and #infosecpub (to maybe a lesser degree) #Kbin / #Lemmy instances are rollin'! We have two growing #cybersecurity communities there for all who are interested.
- Fedia: https://fedia.io/m/cybersecurity (324 subs)
- Infosec.pub: https://infosec.pub/c/cybersecurity (139 subs)I've been adding an interesting (at least to me) article a day to fuel things up as I can. See ya out there.

For everyone creating communities (#Lemmy instances) or "magazines" on #Kbin instances be mindful of the very real deficiencies that exist related to moderation, as @thisismissem writes about here (https://hachyderm.io/@thisismissem/110550824230711531). We're all both excited about the promise the #Fediverse brings and equally pissed at what is going on over on Reddit but there is real *danger* in growing communities using software that might not be ready for it. Read Emelia's post to gain more understanding of the potential pitfalls (and guidance around moderation). One thing I'll add is that botching this migration due to immature software could turn people off from the idea of Reddit-esque fediverse communities indefinitely.
@jerry I'm certainly no expert on community creation/management much less moderating mid-large size communities but there are certainly others within the .infosec sphere (👀 @tweedge) who could weigh in. Maybe it would be helpful to post a guide of some kind (not saying *you* need to create it but you could help market it) which fairly warns #fedia and #infosecpub channel admins that moderation tools are lackluster and to tread carefully as they scale out. Happy to volunteer my own time/perspectives on adding something to a larger wiki for your various Fediversal properties as needed!
