Can embeddings be useful as a way to explore large corpora of historical data? Can we use UMAPs and similarity networks to perform a kind of “distant reading”? That’s the question I asked this spring, along with my colleagues at Impresso.
This resulted in three conference papers, which I’m sharing with you all at once because they offer three different perspectives on the same issue:

These are really just small, preliminary experiments. UMAPs are a very imperfect way to represent the complexity of our data, but perhaps it’s time for historians to start exploring them. If you’ve conducted any similar trials, I’d love to hear about them!
