  1. Today is a contractor extravaganza! I intentionally scheduled a bunch of stuff while my wife is on her roadtrip since it’s so disruptive.

    8AM: Roof & gutter cleaning
    9:30: Replace hose bib
11ish: Backyard yard debris clean up
    1PM: front yard maintenance

If you’re in the SW Portland area I cannot recommend Bruner Plumbing enough! Every person I’ve encountered has been kind and professional. Chris, who came this morning, is an absolute delight and Bertie loves him!

  2. OMG, they put the lift system in the yard by driving it between a rhododendron and azalea!!

The lead arborist told me the call it “the spider” and that they try to get it into as many places as possible!

Here is a video of it starting to exit the yard.

  3. My wife reminded me to get pictures of all the trucks and equipment! The entire team of arborists are here with 4 trucks, a chipper, and a purpose built lift system for arborists that even has treads on the bottom to be maneuvered into tricky places! My inner 4 year old, whose favorite toy was a Tonka dump truck, is delighted.

Our oak isn’t tricky, so it’s just at the curb, but I noticed the treads while Bertie and I went out. Bertie got to meet some arborists and watch the whole production for a few minutes. Ursa, our cat, can hear the chainsaws and is not impressed!

  4. May Day! We’re up early because arborists are here. For once I’ve managed to get some “before” photos! A whole lot of trees and shrubs on our property are about to be trimmed or removed entirely.

For years the power company have had another arborist company go through the neighborhood trimming away from lines. Understandable, but they have poorly trimmed a beautiful, shade giving, red oak that were worried how it may fare in the next ice storm. The arborists we hired are giving it a big trim which will hopefully preserve it. A big trim is also much less expensive than removing the tree.

Our home’s prior owners spent a great deal of money landscaping without thinking of the long term needs ( consequences) of the plants they selected. Plants that can grow to be as large as a vehicle were out over sewer lines and drainage or right against the house. This means we now are spending a lot of money to remove mature rhododendron, camellia, and even a red, Japanese maple!! This is pretty heartbreaking and I am glad I spent a moment to say goodbye to three beautiful plants (the rhododendron just began to bloom)!
