We had a surprise clear skies sunny day today, which was unexpected, and I was already outside with my camera, so that was a great coincidence. On top of that I saw many bird species for the first time!

Some pics from a quick bike ride between Willow Pond and Grant Park in Hewlett, NY, about 1/4 mile from each other. The juvie Bald Eagle actually made its appearance at Willow, then circled over Grant. The egret at Willow looked up when the eagle did its fairly close flyover, but it was surprising that the ducks and geese didn't panic.

At Whitaker Ponds Nature Park, late afternoon brings a sudden frigid wind across the fetch of the pond. Among the rafts of ducks, a tucked-down cluster of #AmericanWigeon; several exotically gaudy #HoodedMerganser males, pied and crested; and a lone female #CommonGoldeneye lifting her brown head from the water. A #EurasianCollaredDove pair courses overhead. A camouflaged #BrownCreeper spirals up a tree trunk - glad I can still detect its sweet, high-frequency call notes!
