Brizzlemania, Brisbane, August 2012. The pre-battle face-off: close proximity, reading the opponent, projecting something forward before a word is spoken. The face before the first word carries everything the performance hasn't yet been able to claim.
After three decades of event photography, the pre-performance moment still interests me more than the performance itself. The performance is shaped. The pre-performance moment shows the person behind the performer.

Brizzlemania, Brisbane, August 2012. Hands extended, weight forward — the body language of a battler who knows how to commit the whole body to delivery, not just the voice. That distinction is visible before you've processed a single word.
The Jordan cap and jersey gave the frame visual identity a generic outfit wouldn't have. At the level of Brizzlemania, that kind of attention extends to everything.

Close positioning rather than a wide shot gave me the relationship between the two of them rather than the room. High ISO, available light, grain. The right kind of document for this room.

Brizzlemania, Brisbane, August 2012. Before the battles — the long-haired MC in the patterned jacket was talking across the group without directing his gaze at anyone specifically. Dispersed attention is an interesting thing to photograph because most portrait work depends on gaze. Remove that structure and you get something more ambient: presence without a focal point.
Real Talk Brisbane's community was as interesting to document pre-event as it was on stage.
