  1. Overall, they have been fun to play with and I think they might be good for learning gouache and sketchbook painting. I felt mostly positive about them until I had to start throwing colors away because of mold!

But I think the value proposition can still be quite good, especially if you're someone who will do a lot of painting and use the colors up before too much mold can develop.

I'd definitely recommend going with one of the smaller sets with fewer colors for that reason alone, and to use it as a cheap opportunity to practice mixing colors as well. If I ever buy another set, that's probably what I'll do.

  2. After playing around with my Himi set over the last 10 months, overall I'm pretty mixed about the popular "jelly gouache" paints.

On the plus side, they're cheap and do the job. The Himi container is nice and durable, and it's a pretty convenient setup with paints, a few brushes and a nice big palette. It does the trick, and it's definitely a nice intro to gouache painting.

At the same time, the concept seems pretty flawed because the paints can grow moldy over time. If the colors dry up they lose that creamy gouache feel, but if you put them away too damp then you're creating and ideal environment for mold to develop.

Maybe this is something that isn't a problem if you use the paints up quickly, but I've now had to throw away 2 entire colors because they developed a layer of mold. I wonder if the famous Nicker poster colors suffer from this same issue too over time? [1/2]
