for projects that have a presence here in the fediverse quite often people think it is a good idea to mention them when wanting to refer to them instead of using their hastag, ex. mentioning @arcanechat instead of using #ArcaneChat hastag to refer to the app

this makes it very hard for people interested in following the topic, since appealing to common sense is too much to ask from the masses it would be nice if #mastodon allowed to follow also mentions, that is, besides following #hastags to also be able to follow any post containing a certain mention
