Just learned that #viktorantonov the art director behind #halflife2 and Dishonored passed away last year at the age of 53.
I have a sudden urge to play through Half Life 2 again. Antonov had a way of envisioning worlds that oozed atmosphere and was a big part of why those games are still looked back on fondly.

My son, a 12 year old Half Life fan, recreated some gameplay in Unreal Engine. He did it on the weekend and everything himself, I didn't help him. He took the sounds from the game Half Life 2. He doesn't know how to create VFX yet, but I'll show him how Niagara works when he wants. He's made all the effects here with simple objects and materials

And, sure enough, we finished up with Half-Life 2, and also cleared the Lost Coast tech demo. Sweet!
The ending was more abrupt than I had expected it would be, truth be told. But maybe that's because there's still Half-Life 2: Episode One and Half-Life 2: Episode Two to go through. So we'll see if the abrupt ending of the main game makes sense.
