New election, new women in Dáil Éireann. Just not many.
In 2016 there was gender quota. The %female went from 13.25% to 21.5%.
A step change. Since then, it hit 22.5% in 2020, and of the 155/174 seats already assigned from last week's election, 25.2%.
Apart from the step change at the time of the gender quota, it's a little stagnant!

The subtle hand of God - Returning Soldier effect
Something as simple as the ratio of baby boys and girls has revealed some interesting aspects of sex. Most of us would have been taught that is roughly 1:1 and that it doesn't change much. Nothing could be further from the truth.
During the first decades of the 18th century German pastor Johann Süssmilch was collecting data. He loved numbers. While compiling the gender of births over many decades he noticed that while it is usually evenly balanced, there can be significant spikes in the ratio of boys being born. These were very evident after significant wars.
In 1742 he published [The Divine Order in Changes in the Human Race, on the basis of the Birth, Death, and Procreation of the Same](germanhistory-intersections.or…). In this he developed the idea that such changes in the birth gender ratio were part of God's rational plan for humans. He felt that his mathematics had revealed the subtle hand of God. He had also established the discipline of demographics.
The effect that he had observed was very real and came to be known as the Returning Soldier effect.
Examples that demographers have spotted include:
1919 UK - after WWI
1944, UK - while this one seems anomalous prior to the D-Day landings tens of thousands of soldiers were sent on leave. There was a significant spike in weddings, and presumably honeymoon activity.
1945-47, USA and UK - after WWII.
In addition to the subtle hand of God, many other ideas have been proposed to explain this.
In 1899 Arthur Davenport hypothesized that the cause was the difference between the comparative ill-health of the returning troops compared to the good health of their partners.
Kanazawa Satoshi theorized that the effect was due to "the fact that taller soldiers are more likely to survive battle and that taller parents are more likely to have sons".
The most significant contribution, and the most likely explanation, came about from the decades of study by Bill James. Having somehow managed to wangle a position at UCL where he had no teaching or administrative responsibilities, he was totally free to concentrate on problems that interested him.
In a [comprehensive analysis of all the available theories](academic.oup.com/humrep/articl…) and his own work, Bill James concluded that the conditions between partners on return of the surviving soldiers created high concentrations of testosterone and estrogen increase the probability of a son. Added to that the observation of the frequency of sex in many species also creates a higher probability of a boy being conceived.
Is that the final word? Any practitioner of science will know that any result leads to another 6 questions. How do these phenomena impact on the female reproductive system to tip the balance in favour of male offspring? So many questions.
Also, not everyone is happy with that explanation. Corry Gellatly of Newcastle University [analysed the family trees of parents who tended to have more boys](popsci.com/scitech/article/200…). The data suggests that there is a specific gene that is responsible for this effect. This is hypothetical as no specific gene has been identified.

Just looked at the website of a new journal in agriculture and rural studies.
Judging from the photos, of the 20 people on the board, 19 are men.
The journal claims to have emphasis on several agriculture and rural development topics, including "Farmer’s well-being, rural poverty alleviation and women’s studies".
I guess they don't notice the irony.

@renordquist I'm very much involved in #OpenStreetMap and am running a user survey. The #genderBalance in that community is very bad as well, with about 90% identifying as male. For now, there are more non-binary and genderqueer people who responded then women... (and I'm very glad to have them in our community, but it is striking to end up with such ratios - it means women are vastly underrepresented here). But I will try to fix it a little bit!
