  12. Why do we have so much #stuff but don't meet #needs ?

I really like this video - as an #EnglishLearner I like the clear language and style, and of course, good content!

#RichardJMurphy about "The Affluent Society" by John Kenneth #Galbraith . It's about why we are rich in stuff but poor in public infrastructure. It's interesting that an #economist wrote about this issue in the seventies!

  19. CW: Transphobia : Trans identity denialism : Rowling : Galbraith

Robert Galbraith, the real life person behind the author of dubious skill known as Enoch Blyton has once again taken aim at transgender people, specifically trans kids by denying their very existence and inso doing also attacking the parents of trans kids, who are supporting their children by using the best evidenced treatment profiles as supported by specialists in paediatric medicine for transgender children and young people.

Of course he doesn't cite any evidence for his claims unlike us in the trans community who can at the very least point to WPATH SOC and organisations like the WHO.

"There are no trans kids. No child is 'born in the wrong body'. There are only adults like you, prepared to sacrifice the health of minors to bolster your belief in an ideology that will end up wreaking more harm than lobotomies and false memory syndrome combined"

Of course it is unsurprising that he uses extremely outdated terms like "born in the wrong body" which is not really used today, even as short hand except maybe by older trans folks.

  20. 3/ Now if you're asked "what does media produce" you might answer something like content or information or messages or entertainment.

This is understandable. This is what it looks like they do. You're forgiven if you thought that's how it worked

This is the trad, orthodox, "idealist" POV.

This is held by everyone from #Galbraith to #Marx to #veblen to #mcluhan

So there's a lot of press on this idea.

Smythe's argument is that it misses the point.

  25. just finished @delong "Slouching". It's an interesting book and particularly illuminating on the Carter/Reagan era. The Carter teams elevation of Paul Volker without even an interview and certainly no idea of what they wanted is appalling. Their economic ineptitude is even more galling when one realizes that #Galbraith was still alive and well and they apparently never even spoke to him. Gailbraith's analysis of inflation is still pertinent and useful. #slouchingtowardutopia
