I throw in spent banana peels into a large bucket of water, with a bit of cane sugar(you don't need much) to speed up the breakdown of peels. If you leave it in sun for 5 days, it looks like this. Strain out & use as liquid fertilizer. You can either bury peels in garden beds or toss into compost to boost biomaterial.

I make my own primitive style of bone meal using discarded, dehydrated fish & meat bones. I just air-dry/sun-dry & then smash them all up into a coarse & bit powdery texture.
I used to make a lot of my own blood meal fertilizers too but no longer have regular sources to make that regularly. It's a more difficult process than making my own basic bone meal too. I use my homemade bone meal as a soil conditioner, straw bale conditioner & to boost my composts too.

Eyeing up my old blue plastic kiddie pool to possibly repurpose into a perpetual moist garden bed - only for watercress. I could grow so much watercress out of a kiddie pool. If it's set up well & slightly protected in Winter - I could potentially have a year round watercress crop to harvest from, as needed for eating.

My family really loves eating watercress. We use it raw & cooked. My fave is a traditional watercress & pork soup - classic cultural soup that I've loved since childhood. Mom & Aunties used to go harvest them from the wilds & from ditches here. You can buy it from most grocery/Asian food markets. It's easier & more frugal to grow our own & harvest from backyard.

I repurpose used plastic knives & spoons as reusable plant markers. It's easy to wipe off old Sharpie ink with some baby oil, wash the plastic cutlery & reuse them many times. They're more durable than store-bought plant markers & easy to write on.

From yesterday. Applied the hydrated alfalfa pellets, cold mulching natural fertilizer, to several transplanted starters & seedlings. I have only used 1/4 of bucket -> it fed 30 transplanted starters & 60 seedlings.

Today, I'm feeding our fruit trees/shrubs/more food/flower plants & putting some where I had recently broadcast sowed more alternative cover crop seeds.

She was trying to tell me that all my efforts are killing the environment & telling me to use shit that most poor folks can't afford to buy in large quantities. I informed her that I've worked on multiple small farms that also use cardboard mulching methods because they also can't afford to buy a bunch of shit to deal with larger acreages where there's too many unwanted weeds/old lawn grass. She said, they're all destroying the environment too by using cardboard 🤡 White saviour types like her are condescending as fuck towards POC & small farmers, in general.

STFU, sit the fuck down. Unless you're offering to buy us all the shit you think we should be using - recognize that you have more privileges than most of us who have been doing food security, rewilding & Indigenous planting for decades - without spending a ton of money that we don't have to spend.
