Teater for barn og ungdom angrepet
Torsdag 13. desember publiserte The Freedom Theatre i Jenin på okkupert Vestbredden at israelske styrker hadde angrepet teateret og arrestert flere av teaterets drivere. Inkludert produsent Mustafa Sheta og kunstnerisk leder Ahmed Tobasi. Tobasi skal ha blitt arrestert utenfor sitt eget hjem som ligger rett ved teateret da han prøvde å konfrontere soldatene som hadde tatt seg inn i teatret og gjort store skader på det.
The Freedom Theatre har gjennom en årrekke arbeidet med å gi barn og unge i Jenin, ofte omtalt som en av verdens farligste byer, håp og et avbrekk fra krig og okkupasjon. Teatret ble etablert tilbake i 2006 og var frem til 2011 ledet av Juliano Mer Khamis. Khamis ble myrdet av ukjente gjerningsmenn i 2011. Gjennom årene har mange unge fått et fristed på teatert, en av dem er Ahmed Tobasi som omtaler det å oppdage teateret på følgende måte: «When I joined the theatre, a small hole opened in my mind… Like a child playing in the garden who finds a trapdoor that takes you to another world… it was magical»
Teateret ble rammet av bombeangrep tidligere i sommer og flere tilknyttede er blitt drept de siste månedene. Deriblant 17-åringen Yamen Jarrar, som var ungdoms praktikant, Jehad Naghniyeh (26) og Mohammed Matahen (30), alle drept i løpet av de siste ukene. I juni 2023 ble 15-årige Sadeel Naghnaghia og 17-årige Mahmoud Al-Sadi drept.
Sommeren 2023 var Tobasi del av en forestillingturné som blant annet spilte forestillinger og hadde workshops i Oslo og Trondheim og under Karlsøyfestivalen. Der fikk publikum presentert en fortelling om livet i Jenin, om flukt, motstand og kraften i teater. Ahmed Tobasi er norsk statsborger, men har valgt å bo og arbeide i hjembyen Jenin. The Freedom Theatre har lenge hatt tette bånd til kulturmiljøer i blant annet Trondheim og på Svartlamon. UFFA har blant annet arrangert konserter til støtte for teateret.
Angrepet på teatret og arrestasjonene av Tobasi og Sheta har vakt sterke reaksjoner blant aktivister og kulturfolk. Det mobiliseres for et opprop rettet mot israelske myndigheter for få frigitt Tobasi og andre kunstnere som holdes som fanger. Angrepet betegnes som et klart angrep mot kunstnerisk frihet og føyer seg inn i en rekke angrep rettet mot frie institusjoner på Vestbredden og i Palestina for øvrig. Så langt har 2023 vært det mest dødelige året på vestbredden særlig har mange angrep vært rettet mot Jenin. Som i likhet med Gaza lenge har vært i en prekær situasjon.
På formiddagen 14. desember meldes det at mer enn 100 palestinere på Vestbredden er blitt arrestert i militæroperasjoner.
