I'm trying hard not to read #FratelliTutti as a broadside against Donald Trump, given its longing for "political love," but it's hard when the evils it decries are so uniquely personified.

I'm on the fence about whether #FratelliTutti is right to apply the old Catholic nemesis of "relativism" to #fakenews. It does seem to step partly from a relativist cynicism ("alternative facts"). But its believability often seems to derive from people's desire for absolutes.

I'm super skeptical about #FratelliTutti's reliance on "dialogue." As Edward Said has reminded us, it's a word often used to paper over a profoundly imbalanced table.

The pope's account of political love in #FratelliTutti actually reminds me of what tends to be the basis of the most withering takedowns by @NathanJRobinson @curaffairs : the greatest sin is a lack of interest in or concern for human suffering.

Striking that the idea of politics in #FratelliTutti is not at all disparaging of politicians. The economics is friendly to business people. It is ruthless to the state if both affairs, but is affectionate to the vocation that calls people to them.

Okay, wow: there is a section in #FratelliTutti on "political love": politics as a "field of charity at its most vast." There's a torpedo aimed at Washington if I ever saw one.

#FratelliTutti quotes and draws from Rabbi Hillel. Have past encyclicals used rabbis as interpretive authorities?

I'm struck by the degree to which #FratelliTutti is a theory of media. "Digital connectivity is not enough to build bridges. It is not capable of uniting humanity." A direct affront to the stated mission of Facebook, for instance.

At another time, a pope dreaming about human siblinghood might sound like more dismiss-able niceness. But in the time of this pandemic and this election and all else... #FratelliTutti is bold.

And then #FratelliTutti goes straight to Francis and the Sultan. Memories of searching through old medieval texts for passing references to that story, so variously interpreted.

So, an encyclical on friendship. Immediately has me thinking gratefully of @BrianCLovato who first introduced me to the idea of friendship as a political category. I wish I had been a better friend. #FratelliTutti
