The Censor Keeps a Copy
Twenty years ago, give or take, a friend told me a story he expected me to admire. He was a Latter-day Saint who worked in technology, and he was, as I understood it then, the bishop of his ward, an unpaid office the church gives to laymen who keep their day jobs, so he kept a company's hours all week and presided over a congregation on Sundays. There was a Mormon bookstore he went into often, and one day he walked in and found a new display for Goosebumps, the paperbacks with the dripping green logo about haunted masks, a ventriloquist's dummy with a mind of its own, and a werewolf in a Florida swamp. He spoke to the owner. The owner told him the books were selling well and that those sales were keeping the store alive. My friend pressed him on content, judged the whole series blasphemous, an invitation to the occult at a child's price, and let it be understood that if the titles stayed on the shelf a report would go to the stake president. A week later he came back. The books were gone, the owner was distant and cold, and my friend bought a couple of books, in his own phrase, to make up the difference. He told me this the way another man might tell you he had coached his kid's team to a championship. He was proud. The word I have settled on, twenty years later, is forensic: he had investigated, prosecuted, and won, and he walked out of that store on the high of it. […] -

Bedsore – Dreaming the Strife for Love Review

Fresh on the heels of other progressive death accolades in the comeback-record-sphere,1 Bedsore has staged a lesser-hyped return of their own. Four years on the books since 2020’s Hypnagogic Hallucinations, about which Ferrous Bueller proclaimed that Bedsore aimed “to be as creative as possible within the band’s preferred scope,” these Italian metal history buffs have returned not simply to their ’90s death metal-inspired roots. Trading logo-adorned garments and pit-tussled hair for amber-tinted shades and pressed, patterned shirts—buttoned enough to allow the tease of a scruffy chest—the Bedsore troupe has turned over not to expose a pustular dorsum but rather an ashen mound of patchouli and burnt flower. Though never absent of psychedelic leanings and progressive tendencies, Bedsore’s prior efforts still appeared death metal first. And now? The hippification is real.
Alas, dreams infect life with ambition. And in Bedsore’s grandest vision yet, they’ve attempted to interpret the classic Italian tale that shares a name, loosely, with this sophomore effort. Given the literary source’s mixed-language origins dating back to the 15th century, Dreaming the Strife for Love requires Bedsore’s new capital “P” prog attitude to even attempt to capture the necessary fantastical grandeur. While Hypnagogic Hallucinations foreshadowed the extended exploration of smoky room jam sessions through twangy amp tones and doom-weighted atmosphere, Dreaming unleashes the full fury of Italian drama through synths, synths, and more synths. Though not quite as horror-toned as their influential countrymen Goblin, the urge to drive with earmarked leads, fluttering segues, and occult camp holds strong in the halls that Bedsore has built with Dreaming.
All these new layers in the Bedsore identity arrive with intention, with unique timbres adding world-building motifs to what will appear, at first, a dense soundscape. In a long-standing prog tradition, Bedsore uses the drawn-out intro of “Minerva’s Obilesque” and first riff-based track “Scars of Light” both to pay homage to great works, like King Crimson’s Red or an Ennio Morricone score, and to introduce a few primary motifs that later tracks explore. And while that dedication to exposition covers a dutiful twelve-minute stretch, its worming characters, as promised, return in dramatic union (“A Colossus, an Elephant, a Winged Horse, the Dragon Rendezvous”) and vibrant swells (“Fanfare for a Heartfelt Love”). And though side A conclusion “A Colossus…” finds part of its footing in established pointers, it too finds a personification of its main players in low synth stomp (Colossus), wailing saxophone (Elephant), playful organ bursts (Winged Horse), and a Zappa-esque guitar squeal (Dragon), all of which come together in a swirling coda. It can be exhausting attenuating the onslaught of constructed sounds, but Dreaming’s colors unfold to those who can.
The total spectrum of sound through Dreaming appears lush at first and even tenth swipe, but its squashing of the mic renders one of its most dynamic elements flat. Dialed Mellotron refrains and delicate cymbal brushes remain bright and focal enough so that the hop to space or slide to calm never feel out of place—Davide Itri’s drum performance throughout shows a mastery of moody tom tumbles and malleted rolls, if a touch light in kick. But in the splendor of these bright intrusions, these marching and booming rhythms, and a lead guitar tone that just won’t quit, Jacopo Gianmaria Pepe’s blackened wail fades in and out of the mix, not for psychedelia’s sake either. As one of the few elements that keeps Bedsore’s toes in deathly waters, these shrieks and howls also can add weight to flighty ventures into Hawkwind patch overload or guitar-saxophone histrionic duels. Instead, and likely intentionally, they dissipate in the haze of instrumental experimentation.
Ever entrenched in cinema, the unique and Italian expression that Bedsore uses to build its prog poses a challenge to the extremity that persists in bursts. Yet, despite the complexity and labyrinthian storytelling that encompasses the Dreaming the Strife for Love experience, Bedsore maintains an effortless flair about every nook and cranny of this deeply planned affair. A band’s continued dive into progressive waters can often feel unnatural or clunky. But tight as the flared trousers that adorn the heroes of Bedsore’s ’70s reimagination, Dreaming in execution leaves little wonder that it could have been anything else. As a surreal tale with an eerie and open-ended conclusion, this sophomore endeavor has set the stage for Bedsore not to fester but bloom.

Hola, nuevamente. Hoy es un caluroso día, ideal para tomar algo y escuchar algo de esta vieja rocola. ¿Me acompañan?
Casi un año después de haber editado su primer disco, el 26/05/1967 The Mothers Of Invention publicaron su segundo album: Absolutely Free. Nuevamente utilizaron los TTG Studios en Los Angeles bajo la producción de Tom Wilson para armar una obra que no íba a ser tan ambiciosa como la anterior, pero que íba a mantener muchos de los rasgos encontrados en aquel. O quizás debería decir que es aún más ambiciosa que la anterior… Bueno, ya veremos.
La banda tuvo algunos cambios. Ya sin Elliot Ingber en el grupo, Jimmy Carl Black, Ray Collins, Roy Estrada y, claro, Frank Zappa comenzaron a grabar el disco junto a cuatro nuevos integrantes: Billy Mundi, Don Preston, Bunk Gardner y Jim Fielder (este último dejó el grupo antes que el disco saliera a las calles y por esta razón fue eliminado de los créditos).
Según Zappa, acá comenzaron sus problemas con las discográficas. Los límites presupuestarios le traían muchos problemas. Claro, una vez que se acaba el dinero, se acabó el tiempo en el estudio. Y si no terminaste, lo siento. Así sufrió Frank con este problema hasta que pudo construir su propio estudio. Además, peleó mucho contra MGM en cuanto a reagalías. Ocho años de juicio contra la empresa para que ésta le pague lo que le correspondía por los dos primeros discos. Desgastante.
Volviendo al disco, nuevamente su temática es una sátira social y política. Conceptualmente cada una de las caras del disco es una suite constituida por un grupo de temas cortos; todos con la firma exclusiva de Zappa.
¿Vamos a escucharlo? Creo que acá tengo una moneda. Vamos...
El lado A (llamado «Absolutely Free»: #1 in a Series of Underground Oratorios”) comienza con «Plastic People» y realmente es muy difícil intentar explicar un tema así. En principio no tiene una estructura definida. Múltiples voces, algunas cantando otras no, un ritmo por momentos inexistente, gritos, cambios de ritmo, acordes disonantes… La melodía solo está en el estribillo, el cual usa el famoso riff de 10 notas del tema «Louie Louie» de Richard Berry. Intenso.
«The Duke of Prunes» comienza con una lenta melodía poco convencional y luego toma algo de velocidad manteniendo dicha melodía con una marcada base del bajo. La experimentación melódica en ambos temas en notoria.
«Amnesia Vivace» sube la apuesta en cuanto a la experimentación. En estos minutos no hay acordes que guíen a una melodía. Solamente sonidos algo inconexos, tarareos y frases habladas relacionadas con el tema anterior.
Y engancha directamente con «The Duke Regains His Chops», que es una prosecución, tanto en letra y música, del segundo tema. A continuación, «Call Any Vegetable», un lindo clásico que pareciera estar compuesto por dos ideas completamente distintas y contrapuestas. La primera, muy melódica y pegadiza. La segunda, mucho más experimental.
«Invocation & Ritual Dance of the Young Pumpkin» es el primer instrumental de la carrera de Zappa y compañía. Siete minutos de ideas que se transforman en un riff veloz con un largo solo de guitarra y vientos; ambos instrumentos con sus propios caminos en la improvisación.
La cara A cierra con «Soft-Sell Conclusion», algo así como el cierre de «Call Any Vegetable». Y al finalizar este parte no sé si me estoy riendo por las jocosas referencias o tengo ganas de comer queso, pasas de uva y vegetales.
En este punto me voy a mantener con la estructura original del disco, ya que en reediciones posteriores aquí hay agregados dos temas extras. Esperemos que el disco se de vuelta. ¡Clic!
