  1. RE: scholar.social/@gedankenstueck

    Quoting Bastian’s blog:

It might look like #forking works as advertised to resolve disputes, but the reality is that forking often is a good “dispute resolution” in the same way as “move to a different country if you don’t like it here” is a good way to solve national political issues

  2. 🚀 Announcing the QUIC(k)est way to reinvent the wheel: it's called Noq, because nothing says "innovation" like #forking an existing project and slapping a new name on it. 🤡 But hey, at least it's written in #Rust, because who doesn't love squeezing out every last drop of #performance while simultaneously inducing eye twitches in C++ developers? 😂

  3. Was it really 15 years ago that the majority of the OpenOffice community voted with their feet against Oracle? Forking the software as LibreOffice, and forming the Document Foundation as a vendor-neutral stewardship body for this office software commons;

    blog.documentfoundation.org/bl

Like the forking of OwnCloud as NextCloud, a reminder that poor Free Code stewards can be forked around (looking at you Mozilla and Android/Linux).

    EDIT: typo

  4. AFAIK the terms 'soft fork' and 'hard fork' entered the lexicon from the crypto world, where they refer to software changes that split a blockchain into sub-chains. With a soft fork, the sub-chains remain interoperable. A hard fork makes them incompatible; what IRC greyhairs might call a 'netsplit'.

But AFAICT, these terms have since been repurposed by others to refer to something similar but different; 2 ways of forking any Free Code software project.

  5. Mike Little: the British co-founder of WordPress you’ve probably never heard of (but should)…

In the story of WordPress –the tool that powers 45% of the web, including 10s of 1000s of film sites– Mike Little is Steve Wozniak to Matt Mullenweg's Steve Jobs. Matt polished the interface, the marketing and curly quotes – while Mike added the blogroll, rebuilt the code, and added the one-click easy-upgrade that's been central to its success. But unlike Woz, Mike never had shares in Matt's $7bn business – or even a job there. He didn't know you could make a living from WordPress until he turned up at the first UK WordCamp. He hasn’t been knighted or hall-of-famed, and isn’t known outside of old WordPress developer circles. Is this because he’s a cheerful and easy-going northerner from Stockport? Because he didn’t have a degree? Because he’s black? I don’t know. All I know for sure, is this is someone who anyone in tech, or who uses WordPress, should know about.

  6. This is such a good article, anyone (any real person anyway) doing open source should read it! 👏👏👏 @andrewnez

    > #GitHub made #forking a one-click operation a decade ago without ever investing in making the resulting graph navigable […] A pull-based model would sidestep most of this, because #agents can #fork and generate garbage all day without anything landing in anyone’s inbox.

  9. 🚀🎉 Breaking news: Yet another #open-source project thinks #forking #X11 is a great idea! Now, devs can enjoy twice the #chaos and half the #productivity. 🤦‍♂️ Expect #GitHub to be filled with yet more commits that no one understands or cares about. 🍿

  10. 🔧🚫 Ha! Someone actually thinks they're "prepared" to fork Firefox? 🤣 With 65 stars and a whopping 18 watchers, they're practically ready to take on the entire internet! 🌐 Just wait until they realize #forking isn't as easy as pressing Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V. 🙄

  15. Some #history, like #Android with #GNU+#Linux...
«#Microsoft's new, #Chromium-based #Edge, was remade with the Blink #engine. #Google originally used #WebKit for its #Chrome browser but eventually forked it to create the #Blink engine. #Apple created the WebKit engine for its #Safari #browser by #forking the #KHTML engine of the #KDE project.»
    «#Mozilla develops the #Gecko engine for its #Firefox browser and the #Thunderbird #email #client

  16. Interesting take on the #forking of #OpenSource software.

Is it the one changing the name of the software or the one changing the license that is making the #fork?

"Terraform By Hashicorp Forked To OpenTF"
    m.slashdot.org/story/418538

    What do you think?

  17. #Nomenclature 🎯#naming pause:
In the #software environment, the #fork system call causes a running process to #split itself into two identical copies.

"The purpose of fork() is to create a new process, which becomes the #child process of the caller."

Taking the #code out of an app and modifying it without the original community is #forking. The #GNUProject in 1996 already used the word for a schism and not a subgroup: groups.google.com/g/gnu.misc.d

  18. @darnell
I did some reading on the counter.social site. Turns out they had a bit of a spat with @Gargron over their geoblocking, and got instance blocked by mastodon.social and other instances who follow his blocklist. So they forked Mastodon and stripped out the federation code.
