  1. Progress! My carbon arrows are finished, too. I'm curious to see how my compound bow copes with them. It's my first attempt; so far, I've only made wooden arrows.

  2. Arrow-making progress: a dozen finished wooden arrows, already given their first coat of linseed oil. After 24 hours they’ll get another coat and then they’re good to go!

Next week I’ll move on to the carbon arrows – those are much easier to put together.

  3. The rest has finally arrived, so the plan for the weekend is set: building arrows and documenting the process for an article, from splining to gluing.

  4. The first of two deliveries has just arrived, including a fletching jig, fletching tape, carbon shaft vanes (feathers), and a digital grain scale. The wooden shaft feathers, shafts, points, nocks, and taper tool are still missing.

I'm a bit disappointed that the announced helical setting isn't included in the fletching jig. The first arrows will probably have straight feathers. You have to work with what you have.

  5. I have just finished preparing for the arrow-building process, i.e. deciding which tools are necessary for making wooden and carbon arrows, and which steps are involved. This is only the first step: preparation. I will start building once I have received all the materials.

  6. I would like to start making arrows for my 40# Falco Triumph flat-arm longbow and my ~50# Hoyt Ignite 2015 compound bow. I already have a good fletching jig. Do you have any good experience with determining the right spine values for arrows? Are there manufacturer specifications and/or essential tools? Answers in German or English are welcome 🙂

The longbow works well with wooden arrows, but the Hoyt requires carbon arrows. I don't know if this is important.

  7. Also, I carved, and fletched another arrow today from some decking timber (some form of eucalyptus i think). The new arrow (darker one in the photo) is a bit heavier than the australian ash arrow i previously made. Possibly i should have shaved a bit more wood off before fletching.
It works though, and rotates nicely in flight.
I am now out of cockatoo feathers, so if I want to make more I’ll need to source more feathers.
