  1. Finished the Terminator series of films with my son. Six films. I don't recall seeing the last/most recent one (Terminator, Dark Fate). I'd say the weakest of the set is Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

How would I rank them, as films?

    1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
    2. Terminator Salvation
    3. Terminator: Dark Fate
    4. The Terminator
    5. Terminator Genisys
    6. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

    What next? The Matrix series?

  2. I was looking up movies to play for October.

The Vast of Night seemed like a good choice and... it's not available anywhere in North America?

    No disc, no streaming, nothing.

It's only seven years old. What happened?

  4. Just watched 'Tony' and LOVED it. Dominic Sessa plays a young Anthony Bourdain, landing in a chaotic kitchen during the summer that shapes his life. It's so charming because it is very personal, warm & tender, you're not watching a legend, just a kid figuring himself out.
    Also Antonio Banderas is great!

  5. So, I don't know if I've talked about Monthly Movie Night on here before.

Way back in 2014 my wife and I had an idea to watch all the Best Picture Academy Award winning movies, in order, from 1927's "Wings" up to the present-day. We would watch one per month, which , if everything went smoothly, would have us catching up the the present day after a few years.

The family got word of the idea and liked it, so we invited them all to come over. We have a big family, and they're almost all locals. So every month we've been hosting about 15-20 people, to watch a classic movie.

We do themed food. (for instance, this month is a western, so we're having chili)

We have a popcorn machine. (a real, full-sized one)

We do movie trivia (with the night's winner, second, and third place receiving the movie candy boxes of their choice, respectively. The cumulative trivia winner for the year gets to pick the New Year's Eve movie. (Yes, we do Movie Night on New Year's Eve every year)

Before the movie, we run a cartoon that matches the theme of the movie. And then we run a trailer for the next month's movie. And then... roll film!

After the movie, we go out and sit around the fire pit, listen to music, and chat until midnight-ish.

Well, 12 years later, we're still going strong.

We've celebrated announcing our first pregnancy at movie night. We celebrated announcing our 2nd kid at movie night. Our youngest is now 7, and our oldest is now 11. To them, a monthly movie night is just a given - "doesn't everyone do a movie night?"

The audience has also grown older. My wife's grandma has come to almost every movie night, and she's now 97 years young and still going strong. She's a hoot. She can't remember anything you just said to her just a minute ago, but she can recount some of the craziest stories from her past. Stories about each of the aunts and uncles that come to movie night, and who are now also in their late 60's/70's.

The goal of watching all the Oscar winners stayed as true as we could make it.

For some movies, they were just not great for a mixed audience, so we skipped those and went with the biggest Blockbuster of that year. When both were no-go's, we picked another fun one from that year.

For Halloween, we always pick a classic. This year we're going with Edwards Scissorhands (even though that's obviously a Christmas movie)

But my kids really want to see it, and they think it's creepy and should be a halloween movie... anyway...

Inevitably, the Oscar winners became too heavy (our last Oscar movie was The Artist, which was fitting, as we both started this journey with a silent film and ended it with a silent film.) so we now have a "fishbowl".

The "fishbowl" contains slips of paper, upon which guests have written either their favorite movie, or a movie they think everyone would enjoy together and might not have seen before.

Tonight, we're watching Stagecoach (1939) - John Wayne's first big hit.

    I just love the poster.

Anyway, that's Movie Night. A right-honourable tradition that I hope never ends.

  8. just watched the original Funny Games and it was SO dark and stressful but I loved it a BUNCH. like, could've absolutely come across as too clever for its own good but the cleverness felt entirely earned and absolutely delicious every time it happened. can't wait to watch the American version soon.

  9. Settling in to watch He's The She. The synopsis makes it sound like it's going to be awful but it came highly recommended by multiple people, and at 10 minutes in I'm loving it.

  10. @emma

OK, OK, I'll go see it. It's almost three hours long and I'll have to get up to pee somewhere in there, and then I'll miss part of it. But OK. You got me.

I adored Dunkirk. I didn't understand Tenet. I thought Interstellar was uneven. But I think this kid Nolan has some stuff goin' on. I want to support him.

  11. ★★★★☆

🎞 The Odyssey directed by Christopher Nolan

    📖 Based on Homer's Odyssey

See the film for Anne Hathaway's Penelope, Elliot Page's Sinon, Samantha Morton's Circe, and John Leguizamo's Eumaeus.

  14. I #watched Near Dark (1987)… 5.0 STARS! #films #Filmstodon #letterboxd

Near Dark is one of the most effective horror films I've watched. It shows the psychological horror of becoming the vampire: having to kill what you once were in order to survive and experiencing an eternal groundhog's day of hunting every night.

  16. I generally am creeped out by films set in 1890s USia, but Strawberry Blonde (1941), James Cagney, Rita Hayworth, Olivia de Havilland, is pretty durn entertaining.

  17. Was listening to the #rewatchables podcast and they covered Sneakers this week.  I feel like I'm one of the few who didn't just fall in love with the movie.  It's very well made, has a great score, and that lineup is hard to argue with.

For whatever reason it just doesn't grab me.. the tech guy who loves computers.. it's in a small list of pop culture I don't fall in line with...and well that's ok.

It is however as timely as ever and well worth a watch.

  18. Hey #Filmstodon if you like Aguirre, the Wrath of God but wish it were longer, and with better cinematography, check out Magellan (2025). Also, fuck colonialism.

  19. My Girl 2 came out in 1994. Guess who finally got around to watching it today?

I was not kidding when i said it can take a very long time for me to watch a film. 😂

Most of the other ones on my to-watch list aren’t quite that old, though.

(It was a pretty decent story, too!)

Just like it's predecessor, The Bone Temple was not quite what i expected.

  21. I #watched Cut-Throats Nine (1971)… 4.0 STARS! #films #Filmstodon #letterboxd

Definitively a primary influence on Tarantino’s Hateful 8. Cut-Throat 9 doesn’t sugarcoat its misanthropy and brutality with smart dialogue and dark comedy.

  22. We had a big conversation about narrative perspective and this film over dinner, so now we’re watching it. A really beautiful film!
