#fediverseproblems — Public Fediverse posts

Hmmm, my blog is throwing 500 errors, that's new, gateway errors have happened before, but not basic 500s. I suspect my blog/Friendica instance might be dead, and while the abruptness is a surprise, its not unexpected. Previously it was hosted with SpaceHost, and something happened over there, at one point there was a reply to a post about billing that it would resume once the lawyers reviewed things. Yeah, that sounds weird, and it was only a couple months later that @gofedi took over the hosting and said the rates would be unchanged… And billing never resumed nor did their site ever switch from coming soon to services offered.
Welp, going to miss some people over there, I had a few very active Diaspora accounts that I'd love to follow or wish could follow me here, but what can one do, Diaspora doesn't share with most of the Fediverse.
I do need to find a host for Wafrn, I was already planning on switching to it, this place is good, but I do prefer to have my own, @admin or @barkmin know of anyone that's offering hosted instances?

The Problem with the Fediverse

I have no issues with the way it is implemented, I have no issues with it at all. For context, I left Twitter to join the Fedi, and it has been great so far! I use Misskey for microblogging, PeerTube for uploading videos, and Lemmy for Reddit-style discussions. The Fediverse is amazing!

Except, idk, for the fact that it is too fragmented? I hope I am using the right words. Like, the current instance I am on does not have support for communities, so i have to do it the hard way and mention @[email protected] so that I can post here. It's a good workaround, considering it doesn't have built-in support for communities.
But my point still stands. It's not a Lemmy/PieFed problem. It's mostly a fediverse problem. Implementing communities for every platform would help the Fediverse. Not only does it solve discoverability/algorithm issues of the Fediverse (since now when you follow a community, you get all posts from that community), but also it would interconnect every platform (Misskey, PeerTube, Mastodon, etc.)

Imagine you don't have to use your Lemmy account to check everything on Lemmy. Instead of creating channels in PeerTube, just post to an existing channel/community, and people subscribed to that channel/community can find you easily. I see this as an absolute win for everyone.


I understand this would require collaboration between all developers of all software. But hopefully, this is possible?
Or am I asking for too much?

If I am wrong, then is there any way in which we can solve this issue?

if everyone can access your data and you can’t simultaneously participate and be in control of it, then it’s not particularly better than a neoliberal capitalist company owning your data.

they still have full access to it.

I was going to suggest going directly to https://mas.to/@hankgreen to make the follow request, but sounds like that won't work either.

I'm trying to renew connections from when I fooled with Mastodon in 2017 on a server far, far away.

I would like to re-star and re-boost some of the toots I starred and boosted back then. They're still sitting there on their instances, good as new. It took me embarrassingly long to realize that there's no magic sequence of hacking URLs and logging in and out that will make this instance today see those old toots from an instance it wasn't connected to back then. Right? #FediverseProblems
