  1. CW: Ra's song (When you're mine) - DC Super Hero Girls OST

Far darker and edgier than I might expect from Cartoon Network: this show ain't just Babs at Burrito Bucket.

I would say "go watch DC Super Hero Girls", but you'll have to brave the ITV Hub, and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Jason Charles Miller performs the song, from a 2018 episode.

  2. CW: I'm gonna make you love me - The Jayhawks

The top 50 #FearOfMu21c countdown is over. For the rest of the month, ten songs that almost made my top 50, plus one for Thanksgiving.

Number 51 in my top 50: The *other* song from those "Dance the night away" alt-country stars.

    From their 2000 album "Smile".

  3. CW: "Downtown" - Saw Doctors and Petula Clark

A great song is a great song, a timeless song works in any era. Especially when it's given a loving remake by people who completely understand it.

The Saw Doctors took "Downtown", persuaded Pet Clark to re-record her vocals, and took over the centre of Galway to make their video.

This one's full of joy and love.

  4. CW: Portions for foxes - Rilo Kiley

Last part of my little menagerie, a very tight song from the mid-aughts.

Jenny Lewis mastered the art of saying a lot in a little space. "Portions for foxes" may be a reference to psalm 63 ("They will fall by the sword: they will be a portion for foxes") and certainly the petit mort of good sex.

This is a song about sex, the yearning and the possibilities. And the happening, and then there is no mystery left.

  10. CW: Toxic - Britney Spears

Celebrity destroyed Britney Spears; she's never been allowed to grow beyond the image we saw in "...baby one more time".

"Toxic" might be the moment when she tried to mature. Both in image and in sound - another crack song from Cathy Dennis! bhangra motifs! the cat burglar!

But then came personal problems, and legal nonsense, and we are where we are. Sigh. #FreeBritney, as we said.

  11. CW: "First day of my life" - Melanie C

The German speaking world had a spot for schmaltz in the mid-aughts, Mel C's tune spent six months in the top ten.

Written by Guy Chambers and Enrique Iglesias, "First day of my life" was originally recorded by Andrea Bocelli for his classical crossover album.

A download-and-radio single on Britain, promoted to adult radio - GWR's Life station loved it, for obvious reasons.

  12. CW: If you love someone - The Veronicas

Gothpop twins Jessica and Lisa Origliasso have been making great music for most of the century. They've gone from power pop through synth-dance, and then into an era of molten Barbie poured into a crucible with black eyeliner.

"If you love someone" is happy, upbeat, inclusive. A big giant hug for all the queers, all the misfits, all the people who don't quite fit into Normal Bread Society.

  13. CW: About you now - Sugababes

One of the greatest pop moments of the 2000s.

The chorus returns – "can we bring yesterday back around?" But this time it's higher-pitched, a touch yelpy. And there's a gloriously discordant high tone, "coz I know how I feel about you now".

By 2007, we're up to Sugababes 3.0, and the video with the young man parkouring his way around south London, hopes to meet up with his date on the Southbank.

  14. CW: Mourir demain - Natasha St Pier & Pascal Obispo

Established francophone singer Natasha St Pier worked with singer-songwriter Pascal Obispo for this song about the fleeting uncertainty of life, thoughtful and poignant. Even if you don't speak a word of French, you'll get the emotion here.

From Natasha's 2003 album "L'instant d'après"; a top five single in France and Belgium in '04.

  15. CW: Over the rainbow - Eva Cassidy

Eva Cassidy died in 1996. She was a natural musician - came up with three-part harmonies from nowhere, improvised with skill and precision - but never hit the record company leagues.

Indie label Blix Street hawked the handful of recordings to tastemakers. One was Paul Walters, the producer of Terry Wogan's breakfast show on Radio 2; the rest is history.
