  1. Tropical?

Where do you think this beautiful beach might be? With its blue sea and sky, clean white sands and peaceful tranquillity, surely this must be Tahiti, Grenada or Antigua.

    Nope.

This is West Beach in Berneray (Beàrnaraigh), Sound of Harris, Outer Hebrides of #Scotland.

  5. Queen Of Icelandic Mountains

This is Herðubreið, literally "broad-shouldered," a steep-sided volcano formed when lava erupted through thick ice.
Tuyas like this are rare worldwide, only found in areas covered by glaciers and with active volcanism at the same time.

At 1,682 meters (5518’) Herðubreið is the 6th tallest peak in Iceland and is called the "national mountain."

One of the many attractions of the country, Jökulsárlón ("Glacier River Lagoon") on a particularly gorgeous November afternoon proves once again why it's just so unforgettable.

  9. Sand Snakes

Crossing Austurfljót river in Hornafjörður south-eastern #Iceland, and a powerful windstorm is ruffling the surface of the shallow water.

Sand snakes are created when strong wind currents carry particles across the ground surface in a stream. Cars are frequently blown off the road here during high winds. Icelandic storm Diddú in 2015 had wind speeds measured at 72.6 m/s (261 km/h, 162 mph.)

  11. Outwash Plain

This expanse of sand holds a secret. If one of the volcanoes beneath the eastern glaciers has an attack of gas (a volcanic subglacial eruption) it can cause what's known as a jökulhlaup - an outburst flood of hot water and rocks that can reach a peak flow of 3000 m³/s and last for days.
When it's over, just sediment remains.

  15. Edge Of The Ice

A February day at the lake and, for now, the slightly warmer water at one end is keeping the ice at bay.

This eutrophic body of water is Mývatn, literally "midge lake." The Icelandic black flies hatch in irritatingly enormous numbers in late summer but are quite harmless.

    The mountain is Vindbelgjarfjall (524 m / 1720 ft)

  17. That's Gneiss

A beautiful July day at the Butt* of Lewis lighthouse, and we marvelled at these lovely rock formations.
I'm a very amateur geologist but I've been told that this is Lewisian gneiss - pronounced "nice" - and is quite widespread in the north-west of #Scotland and particularly in the #OuterHebrides where this was taken.

    * Stop sniggering at the back of the room, I see you 😉 😆

The Highlands of #Iceland in November and the volcanic sands are frosted.

Having seen (and danced beneath) the aurora for the first time the previous night, I awoke very early with great excitement and realised that the day was dawning colourfully.
Dressed warmly and with camera in hand, I was outside at 6am, and so glad that I was.

  37. Dunder And Blixem

Reindeer are not native to #Iceland. They were imported from Norway during the 18th century to create stock agriculture in the country.

These attempts seemed to fail as most of the animals couldn't tolerate the harsh weather conditions and limited food supply and they were assumed extinct, until a herd of roughly 100 was spotted in the east.

As of today, there are about 7000 reindeer in Iceland.
