    October 24: Spellbound at Mordecai

    Time: 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
    Location: Mordecai Historic Park, 1 Mimosa Street
    Admission: Free

    Spellbound at Mordecai offers a family Halloween celebration with pumpkin decorating, handmade goods, stage performances, inflatables and crafts.

    October 31: Day of the Dead 5K and Street Festival

    Race starts: 9 a.m.
    Location: 106 S. Wilmington Street and surrounding downtown streets
    Admission: Race registration required; street festival free

    The 14th annual Day of the Dead 5K and Street Festival celebrates culture and community while supporting the Fox Road Boys & Girls Club, formerly the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club.

    The race begins at Centro and travels through historic Oakwood Cemetery. A free street festival follows on Wilmington Street between Hargett and Morgan streets, featuring vendors, food, music, traditional dancers, family activities and an ofrenda honoring loved ones.

    Halloween also falls on Saturday, October 31, making the final weekend of the month a natural time to plan costume outings and seasonal activities.

    October 1–3: Raleigh Wide Open Music Festival

    Location: NC State Centennial Campus and downtown Raleigh
    Admission: Free

    Raleigh Wide Open begins Thursday, October 1, with a kickoff celebration at The Corner on NC State’s Centennial Campus. The festivities move downtown October 2–3, featuring bluegrass, Americana, folk and other traditional music.

    Alongside performances, visitors can explore arts and crafts vendors, food options and a family fun zone. Raleigh-based nonprofit PineCone produces the festival.

    October 3: Falling for Local at Dix Park

    Time: 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
    Location: Dorothea Dix Park
    Admission: Free

    Falling for Local combines a fall festival with a market supporting independent businesses. The event features more than 180 local makers, live music, food trucks, North Carolina breweries and family activities.

    Hayrides, inflatables, lawn games and photo opportunities round out the day. Admission is free; shopping, food and beverages cost extra.

    October 10–11: Nightmare Weekend Raleigh

    Location: Atlantic Union Bank Convention Center, 500 S. Salisbury Street
    Admission: Ticketed

    Horror fans can celebrate the season at Nightmare Weekend Raleigh. The convention brings together celebrity guests, creators and fans for panels, cosplay and special experiences.

    October 15–25: North Carolina State Fair

    Location: North Carolina State Fairgrounds, Raleigh
