Back in the day, when you got the PC you wanted, you had the monitor and keyboard, and that was it.
For programs like WordPerfect, WordStar, or Lotus 1-2-3, you had to memorize tons of different keyboard combinations. Vendors had to include keyboard overlays for those specific programs (and then some) to make it a little easier for you.
If you wanted a mouse at all, you had to buy one. And there was once a separate driver for the mouse you got.

If you wanted to know what the time of temperature was, you could call a local phone number, often run by a local bank, which would tell you these things.
Some of these still exist and one in Cincinnati was recently getting more than a thousand calls per day.

Before downloading things on the #internet was the main (if not the only) way to get software for your computer -- You could get a bunch of #demos for #videoGames and #software in a #cdRom that came as the cover for a magazine.
#Linux distros would also commonly be distributed in those, and the magazine would often be about Linux itself
If you, like me, were a child without your own disposable income, 90% of your "PC Game Library" was demos and shareware from those cover discs. And you'd just play the few levels/missions the demo came with over and over again.

And at least in my country, magazine cover discs lived well into the mid aughts, after the internet became common. Only instead of demos and shareware, they'd often come with a bunch of free #flashGames poached from #newgrounds and such. -

The label would decide if the record had enough sales potential to release and promote, maybe even send the band on the road to tour behind it.

Calling this "vintage" might hurt some people including myself. Sorry about that.
By letting users create themes, Winamp and its community showcased the importance of cultural representation in cultural centric applications.
Their take on visuals also supports that extravagant UI does not have to imply poor usability.

#HashTagGamesIt's a TV... but with no colour, the screen was curved, and you had to fiddle endlessly with the rabbit's ears until you finally got a good picture. The you had to twist a dial called "fine tuning" to try and get the picture better. You changed station by turning a dial. Then broadcasting would stop for the night, and a test pattern would be on overnight. So you switch it off, and then a little white dot would be left on the screen for ages afterwards...

Back when #Naarm had another name, if you wanted to meet someone somewhere you would give them a "Melways reference". This would be a number, followed by a letter / number pair. Like, if I wanted to tell you how to get to the Punters Club to see the Meanies play, I would use the Melways ref 44 A3.
This would mean that you could get your Melways Street Atlas (there were other people who made street atlases, like UBD, but the network effect of everyone using Melways meant that almost no one bought them), turn to map 44, and find grid reference A6, the corner of Rose and Brunswick St.
