  1. Equinox from around the world with ep. 23 of #EarthEclectic - Honoring Mother, #Autumn , Life, and Earth, as we veer from #FolkMusic to #ChoralMusic to #experimentalism - traveling from England to Canada to the US to Australia. Just four songs in this episode (a couple on the lengthy side) but we cover a lot of ground!

  2. Given his stature in philosophy, and for all its apparent incongruence, John #Dewey's "mystic experience" is surprisingly unknown. Yet its conclusion is a thing of serene beauty. He described it to Max Eastman, maybe 60 yrs after the fact, for Eastman's book 'Heroes I Have Known':

  3. A simple yet overlooked practical & experimental conclusion to be drawn from Jane #Addams' philosophy is that if we wish to introduce new information into any social transaction then, to control the effects of this, we should do so in as noiseless (i.e. neutral) a way as possible.

  4. An instrumentalist conception of perception itself would imply a significant shift both in how we design animal studies and interpret the resulting behavior and in how we understand our own research activities themselves.

  5. Overly fixating on #pragmatism being an "American" philosophy is, through the lens of #experimentalism, akin to fixating on a particular petri dish in a lab where certain effects were first observed.

What's interesting, what's scientific, is to see what happens when we try to generalize phenomena beyond the singular instance of their first observation, when we try to replicate the fruits of that dish in another.

Ultimately 'USA' is no less parochial a notion than 'petri dish 16B'!

Reconstruction is significantly more challenging as an intellectual, moral, and concrete activity than deconstruction. This surely explains in large part why the major philosophies and disciplines of deconstruction came chronologically *later* than the #philosophy par excellence of reconstruction (i.e. #pragmatism/ #experimentalism). One can deconstruct ad infinitum, we've known this for centuries. Intelligent reconstruction, not clever deconstruction, is the real challenge.

  7. Why do #instrumentalism/ #experimentalism/ #pragmatism paradoxically get us closer to reality than #realism?

The former present themselves as a set of quests for meaning, ever-evolving, whereas the latter presents itself as a quest for final truths.

Meaning, as a concept, can never be fully mind-independent. Truth can claim to be. Realism bases its claim to certainty upon mind-independence. However, certainty is itself a meaning. Certainty only has meaning in minds, for agents.

  8. The hard problem of #consciousness as viewed by John #Dewey in 1922:

"There is doubtless a great mystery as to why any such thing as being conscious should exist at all."

Whereupon he promptly proceeds to posit a conditional "But /if/ consciousness exists..." allowing him to immediately get back down to the genuinely hard business of dealing with the real world consequences of how we interpret our experiences of consciousness.

  9. #Pragmatism acts as a guide towards continuously improving practical instrumentalization of perspectivism, whatever the aim of the instrumentalization may be: scientific, philosophical, aesthetic, political, social, spiritual/mystic, intellectual, cognitive. The essence of that guide, in every case, is to live experimentally.

In that sense, pragmatism, instrumentalism, perspectivism, and #experimentalism are all very much in the same line of work. Through an embodied lens, they're synonymous.

  10. Richard #Feynman and John #Dewey never collaborated on a paper together, but if they had it would have been called, "Shut Up and Experiment."

In the social media era of *everyone* being a critic, the below message seems all the more important to consider:

“We lay hold of the full import of a work of #art only as we go through in our own vital processes the processes the artist went through in producing the work. It is the critic’s privilege to share in the promotion of this active process. His condemnation is that he so often arrests it.”

  19. If, as an adult, you still possess the ability to learn as a child and to #experience as a child, then, according to #Dewey's vision of life, you have had a good, because continuous, #education, whether it have been formally or informally received.

If, on the other hand, you have lost that capacity, then the education you have received has ceased to serve you, has worn itself out.

Though it's never too late to start working to rectify the situation.

  20. "Can we imagine a #society built not upon specific theories we have conceived but rather upon our very ability to conceive of theories?"

This is a question I pondered in a blog post many years ago. I have now come to see that, by his #experimentalism, John #Dewey's philosophical objective was to do just this.

    #philosophy @philosophy

  21. #Dewey rejecting a trickle down in favor of a *flow up* perspective of individual and communal experiential enrichment:

“An environment in which some are limited will always in reaction create conditions that prevent full development even of those who fancy they enjoy complete freedom for unhindered growth.”

(From speeches delivered at the South African Education Conference in Cape Town and Johannesburg, 1934.)

  22. "Government, business, art, religion, all social institutions have... a purpose[:]... to set free the capacities of human individuals... [T]he test of their value is the extent to which they educate every individual into the full stature of his possibility."
    - #Dewey, Reconstruction in #Philosophy (1920) [as quoted by #Rorty (1998)].

Wonder what kind of values would be returned were such tests applied to our social institutions, beginning with academia.

Employ the term #experimentalism at least as much as the term #pragmatism. Y'know, just to see what happens.
