I just got a text, a voicemail message, AND an email message from #Eversource claiming that my power is out and will be restored by 9:45pm.
This explains the Eversource truck that was parked at the end of my block when I got back from the grocery store 45 minutes ago.
However… My power is not out. I'm looking at my #Enphase dashboard now, and I'm clearly on-grid.
Best guess: they think at some point in the next hour or so they'll be shutting off my power while fixing whatever's broken. 🤷 -

Man I’m so angry and upset.
TLDR: Josh got scammed by lying door knocking reps switching electricity supplier.
I can’t believe Josh got scammed in March by door knocking sales people into switching electricity supplier to Nordic (yes notoriously). The sales rep actually claimed they work for Arcadia energy. They didn’t mention a word about Nordic. I don’t know what Josh was thinking at the time, because he told me not to trust strangers that come to our door, but he just somehow believed them and handed them the electricity bill (all they ever need to switch your supplier).
And Josh didn’t even tell me. A few weeks ago I saw him putting in credit card number on some website called Arcadia so I asked if he was buying more shoes 🤣 and he told me about Arcadia so I did some research. It didn’t look bad so I just let it slip.
Fast forward to last Friday. Josh sent me the Eversource bill which is $1100 for the past month. He didn’t usually do that, he’d just pay for them. But it is so high that he was surprised so he sent me to look at. We did use more energy compared with the same period last year. But a second look at the supplier rate caught my attention. It was almost doubled from $0.14 per kWh to $0.27. I asked him to send me all the bills this year and the supplier was switched from Boston Municipal program to Nordic three months ago. The rate was close to the municipal program for the first two months so we didn’t suspect a thing. But now it’s almost doubled. I started comnecting the dots and concluded that Josh got scammed back then.

#Eversource replaced my electric meter #today with a smart meter. Ref: https://www.eversource.com/residential/account-billing/smart-meters
During a normal electric outage our #Enphase #solar storage system kicks in automatically so we don't even notice, but while they were replacing the meter everything had to be shut off completely for safety, so our power went out, just for a few seconds since the guy doing the work knows his stuff.
It took about 20 minutes after that for the Enphase system to come fully back online. D'oh. -

#Eversource recently sent me a letter notifying me that they'd miscalculated the amount they owed me from the #ConnectedSolutions program for last summer and I'd be receiving a second check in a few weeks for the difference.
The check just came and it's for… $8.27. 🤨
Quite a let-down, given that the first check was for $1,047.
(ConnectedSolutions is a #Massachusetts program where people with home storage batteries are paid to let the utility pull power during high demand periods.)

Hey #Massholes: if you are an #EV driver you can get into the #Eversource managed charging program now.
I hear #NationalGrid has one too, but mine is this one so this is the one I know about.

#NewHampshire said "No!" to #HydroQuebec #Massachusetts scheme!
Massachusetts to continue talks with #HydroQuébec for #NorthernPass project
Historic $680M electricity project was 1st approved in January, but rejected a week later by New HampshireThe Canadian Press · Posted: Feb 16, 2018
"Despite a rejection in New Hampshire, Massachusetts will continue negotiations on a conditional basis with Hydro-Québec and its American partner #Eversource for the Northern Pass project.
"Hydro-Quebec is counting on the Northern Pass to supply Massachusetts for 20 years, starting in 2020, as part of a historic contract signed with the state in January."It is estimated that the #CrownCorporation could pocket $10 billion in revenue if an agreement is reached.
"The project was rejected by the New Hampshire Site Review Board, which refused to grant a licence essential to Northern Pass's completion in the state.
"The Massachusetts Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs says talks on the project could end by March 27.
"In the meantime, conditional negotiations may be conducted for another project, the #NewEnglandCleanEnergyConnect [#NECEC] , which would be carried out by Hydro-Quebec and #CentralMainePower."

Hey #Massholes: cheaper electric rate if you have a #heatpump for winter heat. I just found the #Eversource form page today.
A friend got an email that they were auto-enrolled, but I was not. You should check.

If you think my electric bill is nonsense, wait until you see my gas bill (natural gas). My usage is less than $5, but they charge me over $30 just to deliver the gas.
It really does suck that you can’t shop around for electric and gas delivery. You can only change the supplier — not the deliverer.

In the United States, you can choose who supplies your electricity (the supplier), but you cannot choose your electric company (the deliverer). So, no matter how energy-efficient you are, the delivery fee is where they really get you, and you cannot escape that nonsense.
My usage is so low that it costs about $40, but the delivery fee varies between $60+.

Here's today's #TechIsShitDispatch, my ongoing series of threads demonstrating that the more you interact with tech, the more shitty tech you encounter, and if you look hard enough you'll probably discover that you encounter shitty tech that shouldn't be shitty every single day of your life.
Today we've got new shitty teck from #AirBNB, #SalemStateUniversity, and #Eversource, and an update on previously reported #Synology shitty tech.

Last night’s nothing brought down a huge tree branch at five in the morning, knocking out our building’s power and blocking our only exit. For all the complaining we do about Eversource, they did have power restored in two hours, and the tree disappeared in six.
(Obligatory “don’t go near downed wires.”)

Networked geothermal power could change cities:
‘Every building sits on a thermal asset’
While temperatures above ground fluctuate throughout the year, the ground stays a stable temperature,
meaning that it is humming with #geothermal #energy that engineers can exploit.“Every building sits on a thermal asset,” said Cameron Best, director of business development at Brightcore Energy in New York, which deploys geothermal systems.
⭐️“I really don’t think there’s any more efficient or better way to heat and cool our homes.”⭐️And now the big utilities are beginning to take a good hard look at that system.
A couple of months ago #Eversource #Energy commissioned the US’s first 🔸networked geothermal neighbourhood 🔸operated by a utility, in Framingham, Massachusetts.Pipes run down boreholes 600-700ft (about 180-215 metres) deep,
where the temperature of the rock is consistently 55F (13C).
A mixture of water and propylene glycol (a food additive that works here as an antifreeze) pumps through the piping,
absorbing that geothermal energy,
then flows to 31 residential and five commercial buildings, where fully electric #heat #pumps use the liquid to either heat or cool a space. If deployed across the country, these geothermal systems could go a long way in helping decarbonise buildings, which are responsible for about a third of total greenhouse gas emissions in the US.
Once a system is in place, buildings can draw heat from water pumped from below their foundations,
instead of burning natural gas piped in from afar.
🔹Utilities use the same equipment to deploy networked geothermal as they do for gas lines,
and even the same kind of pipes
– they are just circulating fluid instead of gas.♦️The networks don’t need special geology to operate, so they can be set up almost anywhere.
The project in Framingham, then, could be the start of something big.To scale up, a geothermal loop such as Framingham’s might connect to an adjacent neighbourhood, and that one to another.
“In the end, what we would like is if the gas utilities become #thermal #utilities,” said Audrey Schulman, executive director of the nonprofit climate-solutions incubator #HEETlabs
(a spin-off of the climate nonprofit HEET, which began pitching the idea to Eversource and other utilities in 2017).
“Each individual, shared loop can be interconnected, like Lego blocks, to grow bigger and bigger -

Just had the power go out briefly 3x and then come back. Not sure if they’re doing maintenance today or it’s just because of the rain moving through, but I hope it clears up later.
I have a coding interview I’m going to try and I kinda need power for that.

Whelp. Can't deposit this check electronically because look how #Eversource signed the check and the app can't tell there's a signature. 🤦♀️
Going to have to try in person or get a new check.

Reporters should ask: has/is #Eversource gas division been on-site and did they/are they repairing any gas leaks in the aftermath of the explosions? Has methane gas been ruled out? Simple questions almost no one asks.
