C’è stato un tempo in cui essere chiamati “geek” era quasi un insulto. Oggi, invece, è un motivo d’orgoglio. Se ami passare ore a parlare di Star Wars, collezioni fumetti, costruisci PC, conosci a memoria i Pokémon, hai una libreria piena di manga o sei capace di spiegare la fisica quantistica davanti a un cappuccino… questa giornata è dedicata proprio a te!

Ogni 13 luglio si celebra infatti l’Embrace Your Geekness Day, la Giornata dedicata a chi sceglie di mostrare con orgoglio le proprie passioni, senza vergognarsi di essere diverso, curioso e incredibilmente appassionato.

E, diciamolo, oggi essere geek è decisamente di moda!

Cosa significa davvero essere “geek”?

Molti confondono i termini geek e nerd, ma non sono proprio la stessa cosa. In linea generale:

• il geek vive con entusiasmo una passione specifica;
• il nerd viene spesso associato allo studio e alle materie scientifiche.

Naturalmente i due mondi si sovrappongono spesso e ormai la distinzione è diventata piuttosto sfumata.

Un geek può essere appassionato di:

• fantascienza;
• fumetti;
• videogiochi;
• anime e manga;

• LEGO;
• tecnologia;
• programmazione;
• astronomia;
• modellismo;

• fotografia;
• storia medievale;
• treni in miniatura;
• cucina molecolare.

Insomma, basta avere una passione coltivata con entusiasmo quasi “enciclopedico”.

Chi ha inventato questa giornata?

L’Embrace Your Geekness Day è una festività non ufficiale ideata dai coniugi Thomas e Ruth Roy, fondatori di Wellcat Holidays, un progetto statunitense famoso per aver creato centinaia di giornate curiose e decisamente originali.

I Roy hanno sempre sostenuto un’idea molto semplice: ogni passione merita di essere celebrata almeno una volta all’anno.

Così è nata anche questa giornata dedicata ai geek.

Quando si è festeggiata per la prima volta?

La ricorrenza è stata introdotta da Wellcat Holidays nel 2017, anno in cui compare ufficialmente tra le giornate celebrative del calendario creato dai suoi fondatori. Da allora, ogni 13 luglio viene ricordata in numerosi calendari internazionali dedicati alle “fun holidays”.

Perché proprio il 13 luglio?

Ed ecco la domanda che incuriosisce tutti. La risposta è sorprendentemente semplice: non esiste una motivazione ufficiale.

Thomas e Ruth Roy non hanno mai spiegato pubblicamente perché abbiano scelto proprio il 13 luglio. A differenza di altre ricorrenze legate a eventi storici, compleanni o anniversari, questa data sembra essere stata selezionata semplicemente come giornata simbolica da dedicare all’orgoglio geek.

E forse è anche questo il bello. Non serve una ricorrenza storica per ricordarci che le passioni meritano spazio ogni giorno.

Da insulto a complimento

La parola geek ha avuto una storia davvero curiosa. Secoli fa indicava addirittura artisti circensi piuttosto bizzarri.

Nel Novecento diventò un termine usato per descrivere persone considerate eccentriche, poco popolari o troppo intelligenti.

Poi arrivarono:

• Internet;
• i videogiochi;
• i fumetti Marvel;
• i film fantasy;
• la cultura pop;
• gli smartphone;
• le grandi aziende tecnologiche.

All’improvviso i “ragazzi strani” diventarono quelli che progettavano il futuro.

Oggi essere geek significa spesso essere creativi, competenti e pieni di curiosità.

Quando il mondo è diventato… geek

Negli ultimi vent’anni la cultura geek è uscita dalle camerette per conquistare il mondo.

Pensiamo soltanto a:

• i film Marvel;
• Star Wars;
• Harry Potter;
• Il Signore degli Anelli;
• Stranger Things;

• Pokémon;
• Minecraft;
• Dungeons & Dragons;
• il cosplay;
• gli eSport.

Quello che una volta era considerato “di nicchia” oggi riempie cinema, fiere e stadi.

Le curiosità più divertenti dal mondo

In Giappone esistono quartieri interamente dedicati agli otaku. Tra manga, videogiochi, action figure e sale giochi, è facile perdere il senso del tempo.

Negli Stati Uniti si organizzano matrimoni a tema Star Wars. Sì, con tanto di spade laser e invitati vestiti da Jedi.

Alcune università insegnano la storia dei fumetti. Supereroi e graphic novel vengono ormai studiati anche dal punto di vista artistico e culturale.

I LEGO sono diventati oggetti da collezione. Alcuni set fuori produzione vengono venduti a cifre davvero sorprendenti.

Esistono gare internazionali di cubo di Rubik. I campioni riescono a completarlo in appena pochi secondi. Noi, invece, siamo ancora alla ricerca del lato blu.

I cosplayer impiegano mesi per realizzare un costume. Alcuni abiti richiedono centinaia di ore di lavoro artigianale. Più che un hobby, è una vera forma d’arte.

Esiste persino una giornata mondiale dell’asciugamano. I fan di Douglas Adams lo sanno bene. Il 25 maggio si celebra infatti il celebre Towel Day, durante il quale si gira con un asciugamano sulle spalle in omaggio alla saga Guida galattica per gli autostoppisti.

I geek non perdono occasione per divertirsi.

Come festeggiare l’Embrace Your Geekness Day

Le regole sono semplicissime.

• Indossa la tua maglietta preferita.
• Guarda la tua saga del cuore.
• Organizza una maratona di videogiochi.
• Leggi quel fumetto che aspetta da mesi.
• Costruisci un set LEGO.
• Sfida gli amici a un gioco da tavolo.
• Impara qualcosa di nuovo sulla tua passione preferita.

E soprattutto… non chiedere scusa per ciò che ti rende felice.

Geek sì, ma con stile

Anche la moda ha abbracciato il mondo geek.

Oggi troviamo:

• sneakers dedicate agli anime;
• collezioni ispirate ai supereroi;
• borse con richiami ai videogiochi;
• gioielli ispirati alle galassie;
• capsule collection dedicate ai manga;
• abiti che reinterpretano l’estetica fantasy.

Insomma, essere geek non significa più rinunciare allo stile. Anzi. Le due cose possono convivere perfettamente.

La filosofia della giornata

L‘Embrace Your Geekness Day ci ricorda una cosa bellissima: le passioni non hanno età.

Che tu abbia 15, 40 o 80 anni, non smettere mai di emozionarti davanti a un fumetto, a un videogioco, a un romanzo fantasy o a una nuova scoperta tecnologica.

Perché in fondo, essere geek significa semplicemente continuare a meravigliarsi. E forse il vero superpotere è proprio questo.
