An ICE agent shot another person today, just 14 miles from my home - at 1:00pm on a Sunday in a busy area. Details are still coming out as to what happened, but from my understanding the man shot, Wilber Perez, was at time working doing DoorDash deliveries, and had come here two years ago from Venezuela to escape the poverty and oppression there. His attorney has stated he has a work permit and entered the USA legally.

Whatever his legal status is, unless evidence is presented by a body independent of the DHS (given it has absolutely lied over and over in numerous recent similar cases), that Perez was somehow acting violently at the time, and that there was no other way to deescalate the situation than via shots, then I'd say this case represents yet another example - that the people creating major hazards to our public safety here are NOT immigrants like Perez, but rather trigger happy barely trained ICE agents, that are being foisted quotas and incentives by Executive branch appointees (such as bigoted a$$hats like Stephen Miller) to make huge numbers of detainments, and then shoved into our communities.

Which gets me to note once again that we need to END the ICE. No, ifs, ands, or buts. No "they just need more funding for better training." Rather an absolute end to this organization, given that:
The ICE has only existed since 2003, at a cost to taxpayers of billions every year, a cost that has incredibly ballooned up to over $70Billion for this year, and across its 23 years it still not shown it serves a useful function, as it is REDUNDANT
The ICE is not needed to guard our borders - the Border Patrol does that.
The ICE is not needed to inspect imports - the Customs and Border Protection agency does that.
The ICE is not needed to protect our shores - the Coast Guard does that.
The ICE is not needed to protect us from criminals - our local and State Police and County Sheriffs do that.
The ICE is not needed investigate and prosecute inter-State crime - the FBI does that.
The ICE is not needed to gain intelligence on foreign terrorists and criminal cartels - the CIA does that.
The ICE is not needed to process immigration and naturalization - the USCIS does that.
The ICE is not even needed to handle deportations - as the DoJ could handle that.

And given that the one unique function of it is the detainment and deportation of immigrants found within the USA - let’s talk about what an idiotic policy this is. If someone’s only crime is that they entered the USA illegally, or over stayed their visa, but they are otherwise are just functioning as peaceful members of society, then it is absurd to spend taxpayers’ earnings to remove them - we should instead give them an easy path to legal residence and just let them be. And on the other hand, if someone that is not a US citizen that has committed an act of violence, then they should be given due process same as any other resident, and subjected to the same proscribed punishments as US citizens would be - and if it is a prison sentence then that should be served in a US facility where it can be much better guaranteed that they will not just escape to return back to being at large in the USA, or that they are held in foreign places where inhumane conditions are the default. But the current expenditures to first detain tens of thousands for months on end, and then to ship some of these out, in some cases to places half way around the globe, and in some cases to places where they will be tortured, only to have some just return at a later date, is an absolute waste of our resources and earnings, that could be spent way better elsewhere. Given that so many of the people detained and deported were non-violent, and some even falsely accused legal residents or even US citizens, the policies behind the ICE and the majority of its actions are also a massive affront to what were supposed to be the most cherished ideals enshrined in our Declaration of Independence. We can and should do better.
