It feels like a new #ElfkinLaunch achievement has been unlocked. I am most fortunate to have a sudden bounty of commissions. So the past few days have been all about gathering samples and working up the costing.
In doing so, I have made a delightful discovery. When one tells suppliers that they are properly in the trade, all sorts of secret doors open. Oh, the adventures we shall have!

In the past week, I've gotten three commissions consisting of six looks/13 garments total. And two more commissions are just waiting for me to work up the sketches to move forward.
I think #ElfkinLaunch has decided to happen of its own volition and regardless of whether or not all of the trunk show looks I planned are even done.
Hot damn!
Also, please send additional hours in the day.

All of the facings for the prototype stitch of the vest for Dan’s velvet tux are attached. While I would normally never bother with stay stitching on a test stitch up, these lining fabrics are unmanageable if one doesn’t do something to keep the fraying under control. #sewing #ElfkinLaunch

The muslin prototype of the shirt that’s going with Dan’s velvet mafia look for the #ElfkinLaunch trunk show is all done up.
It was a good opportunity to continue getting used to the reverse pedal that I recently installed on my Pfaff 238. The experience is a lot like learning to drive a manual transmission. Only without my mother laughing uncontrollably in the passenger seat.
Also, yes, I did indeed sew the buttonholes in from the wrong side on the French cuffs. 🤷🏻♂️

The “party look" for Nick is all sketched up. Not sure how well it reads in this jpg, but adding a light fabric to the already shapely princess panels really helps pull that torso line into the ideal inverted triangle. #fashion #sewing #ElfkinLaunch

I've decided to try Illustrator for fashion sketching. Mostly because my hand drawn sketches are just too rough to show to clients. And all of a sudden, elfkin has clients!
While this won't win any awards, I think it does an effective job of communicating my vision. Now I just need to work up the party and daytime formal looks for Nick, and we'll really be off to the races. #fashion #sewing #ElfkinLaunch

The roughly five bajillion fiddly little pattern pieces of Dan’s three piece suit and shirt are cut out and ready for prototype stitching. #sewing #ElfkinLaunch

I guess there's nothing to do for this busted migration back from mastodon.art to woof.group but wait for it to sort itself. The last six prototype garments for the #ElfkinLaunch trunk show are now patterned up and waiting to be stitched, so I'm gonna carry on with that and try not to burst into tears over my masto accounts being broken.

I want a circular hip pocket on Darla’s pants so that, when worn with the accompanying vest, the pocket opening looks like a cat eye. Step one: trying out the construction technique on some muslin. The purple bit is a patch pocket that ends at the bottom of the opening, and the main bag (magenta) extends like any front pocket bag. #sewing #ElfkinLaunch
-
Because the relative proportions and curves are quite different, I'm having to actually sketch out Darla's #ElfkinLaunch trunk show look before I can draft up her production patterns. Which are the last two patterns I need to draft in this cycle in order to move on to the parts I enjoy much more.
Related: I am terrible at sketching and drawing. Like, the worst.

Dan's dinner jacket pattern draft is nearly done, praise Jeebus! This illustration is my attempt to share the process.
First the bodice block (black) becomes a 4 panel suit foundation (yellow). That gets adapted into 6 panels (magenta) with princess seams. Last, the front (cyan) gets its final shape.
The sleeve starts as a block (yellow), gets reshaped for the larger armscye (magenta), and is split into separate pieces (cyan). #sewing #tailoring #couture #ElfkinLaunch

A big part of high-end #couture #tailoring is seam bulk reduction. This starts with eliminating extraneous seams through pattern manipulation.
See also: the pants and vest I've been drafting for Dan's #ElfkinLaunch trunk show look. The vest's back facing piece has been fused to the front shell piece. Similarly, the waistband, fly, and pocket facing pieces are fused with the front pants piece. To further reduce waistband bulk, their inner linings are fused to the inner pocket bags.

With all of the fittings of the formalwear looks for the #ElfkinLaunch trunk show done, a marathon drafting session is on to finish the production patterns for the last two models, Dan and Darla. Along with Jeremy, they’re all getting the full luxury #tailoring finish. This entails having to draft in a bunch of extra details like cut-on flies, waistbands, and facings to reduce seam bulk to a minimum. The final effect will be 👨🍳💋 but feels like fiddly busywork right now. #sewing #couture

The muslin prototypes of Jeremy’s shirt and trousers are done. I’ll start on the suit jacket prototype on Monday.
This is hardly the sexiest part of the process, but it’s a crucial step in converting custom pattern blocks into production patterns.
Since it’s rough and ready stitching, no finishing, it goes pretty quickly.

New instance, new #intro - part two.
It occurs that I should pin a few images of my #couture / #tailoring / #sewing adventures that are part of #ElfkinLaunch.

#ElfkinLaunch news update: though the potential new customer who expected to pay Bonobo's prices for custom couture didn't work out (shocker, I know), they were immediately replaced by a far better prospect. A workplace chum saw my change in career on LinkedIn and got in touch. Not only does he want three (3! squeee!!!) looks, including a suit, he was immediately asking where to put the money.

The third iteration of Darla’s fitting bodice and pants are stitched up. Adapting the menswear drafting formulas for a woman’s body has been a journey, and hopefully I’ve finally worked out the kinks. #sewing #tailoring #ElfkinLaunch #couture
-
The second phase of #ElfkinLaunch has begun. I took a break from beading that fabulous caftan to revise the fitting blocks for Darla and to draft up Jeremy’s single breasted suit. Both for the eventual trunk show.
Related: suit jackets are a trip to draft. So. Many. Transformations. #sewing #tailoring

#ElfkinLaunch continues with Ernesto's look: Boys in Wartime Just Wanna Have Fun. One can scroll down the page a bit for links to behind-the-scenes and making-of videos.
Also, for those who might want an elfkin look of their own but don't live near me, fret not! We can use video chat and the postal service to do measurements and fittings remotely. #sewing #fashion #couture #tailoring #lgbt #artist

After a week of pixel jockeying with videos and photos and websites for #ElfkinLaunch, I am back to the #sewing room today. It’s time to put a less Pilgrim looking collar on Jeremy’s shirt. Never thought I’d be so happy to see plain white cotton! #tailoring #MenWhoSew

Y'all, #ElfkinLaunch is finally here!
Let's kick things off with Armond saving lives with his thick thighs. #sewing #menwhosew #tailoring #artist #lgbt

With the official opening of my tailoring business imminent, I’m finally buckling down and editing the videos that we’ve made with Armond, Ernesto, and Jorge.
Also, while I’m glad I have the skills to edit video competently, it’s super duper, extra special not my favorite thing. #ElfkinLaunch

The very white shirt I’ve been making for Jeremy is done-ish. I tried a new collar shape to compliment the vintage panelling technique that I used to eliminate the darts, and it came out kinda Puritan chic (see also: ugly). Which means I need to redraft the pieces and redo that whole bit.
Later.
Right now I’m gonna enjoy some tasty indica flower and tidy the #sewing room. #tailoring #ElfkinLaunch

Jeremy’s *very* white shirt is coming right along. Sleeves are on and bodice is all done up. It’s been fun to watch the five panel, yokeless design come to life. Definitely fun and quick to sew. #sewing #tailoring #ElfkinLaunch

One of my #ElfkinLaunch trunk show models, Jeremy, is a fancy lawyer in real life. In a delightful sign of things to come, he asked if I could rush him some courtroom ready dress shirts. All in plain white cotton.
I have literally never made a plain white cotton shirt.
And I’m not going to start today! To keep the work exciting, if not literally monotonous, I’ve drafted a yokeless pattern with shaped side panels for him. #sewing #tailoring

Best #blep from Sunday's photo shoot with @motoridersd. I promise the rest are coming very soon! #ElfkinLaunch

Between photo editing, new client schmoozing, and dealing with the crew who’ve come to fix the roof, I managed to get the #PinkDiamondShirt finished yesterday evening.
Special thanks to @sbourne for encouraging me down the path to add the single diamonds at the collar tips. #sewing #tailoring #couture #lgbt #artist #ElfkinLaunch @sewing

The #PinkDiamondShirt approaches its completion. Sleeves and collar are attached. Side seams are done up. Just need cuffs, buttons, and a hem. #sewing #tailoring #couture #lgbt #artist #ElfkinLaunch

Fronts are all done and laps are in on the sleeves. It’s time to attach the yoke and make the #PinkDiamondShirt happen. #sewing #tailoring #couture #lgbt #artist #ElfkinLaunch

The plackets are on, pockets half done, and collar all prepped on hubby’s birthday shirt. Time to stash this away and head to the airport to pick him up!
