Dryburgh Abbey's fortunes fluctuated over the centuries, and it experienced further destruction during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, when religious reformers dismantled monastic establishments across Scotland. By the mid-17th century, Dryburgh Abbey lay in ruins.
Despite its ruined state, Dryburgh Abbey is renowned for its architectural beauty and historical significance. The remaining structures include the nave, the cloister, and parts of the chapter house and dormitory. Dryburgh Abbey was burned by English troops in 1322, after which it was restored only to be again burned by Richard II in 1385, but it flourished in the fifteenth century. It was finally destroyed in 1544, briefly to survive until the Scottish Reformation, when it was given to the Earl of Mar by James VI of Scotland.
