We crept toward the flickering glow. Ahead, a small room came into sight with blue balls of fire floating inside. Faint laughter echoed from some place unseen: liquid and chilling.

Sumika froze in the dark passage, studying the chamber.

“Slow-moving lights, just below the floor,” I observed. “No tails, so they aren’t onibi. I’d say they’re hitodama, dead souls.”

“Harmless?” she asked.

That #dovetailed with my assessment. “Probably,” I said.

“Should I go on?”

“You’re the mistress.”

“And you’re no help.”

My lady moved gingerly into the room, avoiding the stray lumber that littered the floor. As she advanced, the globes faded and vanished, accompanied by a disembodied sigh.

“Look, stairs,” Sumika said, pointing to the far side.
