Today, in trivial crap that nobody except me really cares about: learned that Amazon’s implementation of #exoplayer on #Firestick gets confused when there is both HDR10+ and #DolbyVision metadata encoded in the same video stream, resulting in black screen on vid playback. Have to either force disable DV or HDR10+ in order for playback. Which can be done in #KODi. KODi on #AndroidTV however works fine because google’s exoplayer build doesn’t have this issue.

Okay. ONE improvement with the #AppleTV that you don’t get on other streaming OS’s. You can switch the video output to lock into 4K SDR rather than #DolbyVision or #HDR10+. The reason you would do this is because several series/shows, especially on AppleTV+ (the streaming content service, not the hardware) like Invasion, The Last Thing He Told Me and Foundation, are inexplicably dark as hell when viewed in DV. Viewing in SDR brightens the output considerably. Same with Terminal List. Incredibly dark.

I have no idea why these shows are mastered at such a woeful brightness level but at least the AppleTV has this “solution” for it.

And I hate that you have to turn off the main attracting factors of modern TVs (DoVi color breadth, #DolbyAtmos audio etc) in order to compensate for quirks. Shit really should just be produced properly and WORK properly out of the box without having to fiddle the fuck out of config after config to just get nice audio and video. 🤬

After three days of intensive experimentation I’ve literally packed up my top of the line #AppleTV in its box and won’t be using it anymore. I read someone say that if you only ever buy one Apple product, let this be it. Nope. Completely the opposite experience. While there are some good aspects to it (responsiveness being one), the failures far outweigh the benefits. #GoogleTV runs rings around it. I hate the remote - lack of buttons and the feel of it, although rechargeability is a big plus. I hate the fact that it doesn’t integrate #YoutubeTV or any live TV at all. Look at the screen pics from GTV. Can’t install #KODi. #Infuse is Apple’s alternative but to play #DolbyVision or any Dolby 5.1 audio at all costs a NINETY BUCK IAP. GTV even shows you what was recorded in my YTTV DVR. And the continue watching shows things from #Netflix. NF doesn’t show up at all in the AppleTV interface. Epic fail and this time the fanboys have it dead wrong. Hundred bucks wasted but I’ll scalp it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

#HDR grade on the new Attenborough series is excellent.
Although the iPlayer has less HDR content than Netflix it is less variable; all #HLG content (live & post-produced) is compelling unlike much #DolbyVision content which looks like very bright SDR.
