There is nothing like a Cartel to keep an Insufferable interloper on the far side of the moat they have built over many decades.
It is no secret that Starlink/Elon Musk have begun angling to get into the full service wireless market ....
This post outlines many of the key obstacles Starlink faces, none the least of which is the incumbents know how to protect their space - pun intended ! https://www.techdirt.com/2026/08/11/elon-musk-wants-to-get-into-wireless-phones-and-hes-probably-not-going-to-have-a-good-time/ #Starlink #Musk #Wireless #Mobility #CellPones #Direct2Device #WirelessPhoneService #Spectrum #PhoneService

SpaceX email to Canadian regulators maps out some of Starlink's plans for "next-generation" direct-to-device (direct-to-cell) satellites/service.
SpaceX indicates it will begin launching its next-generation spacecraft in "late 2027" and by the end of 2028 will have "thousands more satellites" in space.
Success depends on a BIG caveat - consumers will need to purchase next-gen mobile devices! https://www.pcmag.com/news/starlink-mobile-will-span-thousands-of-satellites-by-2028
Coming Soon! TheTechAptitude newsletter https://techaptitude.substack.com/ is planning to post a detailed overview of Starlink satellite broadband service - stay tuned! #Space #SpaceX #Starlink #SatelliteBroadband #Internet #SpaceInternet #Direct2Device #Direct2Cell #TechAptitude #Mobility #MobilePhones #Satellites

Amazon LEO D2C service is looking to put ~5,100 satellites into orbit with deployment starting in 2028.
On Sat. July 24/2026 (interesting) Amazon filed an FCC Form 312 Application for Satellite Space Station Authorizations for "Amazon Leo D2D System" described as "Mobile-Satellite Service, 1.6/2.4 GHz Mobile-Satellite Service, Fixed-Satellite Service" using the following radio frequency bands:
24c. L-Band (1-2 GHz)
24d. S-Band (2-3 GHz
24h. Ka-Band (17-30 GHz)
24i. Q/V-Band (35-75 GHz)"Kuiper Systems LLC requests authority to launch and operate a non-geostationary orbit satellite orbit system to deploy and operate mobile-satellite services." https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/27/amazon-satellite-internet-network.html
The request asks for 5,105 satellites

Battle of the Titans Brewing in the Satellite Direct 2 Device (D2D) Market
Research Boffins @ mobility market trade associations are calling bullshit on SpaceX predictions of a Total Addressable Market (TAM) reaching $740B for its Starlink Mobile direct-to-device division, countering that the true TAM is more like $15B.
Further, they are flagging that US mobile operators are forming a joint satellite venture to reduce reliance on external providers (SpaceX) and retake gain control over the satellite layer, and at the same time move towards neutral-host, shared infrastructure models. Stay tuned to the space! https://satnews.com/2026/07/06/the-big-three-unite-to-blunt-starlinks-reach-as-spacex-ipo-reshapes-direct-to-device-landscape/ #SpaceX #StarLink #Direct2Device #Space #SpaceInternet #Mobile #Satellites #Networks #Internet #NetworkInfrastructure #Neutral_Host_Model

Amazon bulks up its LEO Direct-to-Device (D2D) services by acquiring GlobalStar - a Louisiana based mobile satellite services (MSS) operator.
Amazon is picking up Globalstarβs existing satellite fleet, satellite operations, infrastructure and assets, including spectrum licenses with global authorizations with the goal to bolster its own direct-to-device satellite system, which it expects to start deploying in 2028.
Oh, ya, there is a little side deal with Apple too! https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/company-news/amazon-globalstar-apple #Amazon #GlobalStar #LEO #Apple #D2D #Direct2Device #Space #Satellite #Mobility #SatelliteServices
