I do this with every tama run I do, even if I've already reviewed a tamagotchi, but this one is new to me, so I have no idea what to expect.

First impressions: Like the pix, I lament the lack of physical buttons. I think pretty physical buttons is a big part of the tamagotchi experience that is fun. I swipe on my phone all day. My phone is a tool. My tamagotchi is a toy and I want it to feel like one.

Maybe my fingers are weird, and also I have long nails, but the screen doesn't feel well calibrated nor is it easy to do gestures, which you need to do to get to other menus.

Switching to english was super easy. I just bought this english patch card and followed the instructions on the product page and it was done really fast! (I did plug the card in wrong 3 times though :neobot_nervous_sweat:)

If you don't like tamagotchis, this is a good time to mute the #tamagotchi hashtag.

If you're not aware, groups on mastodon boost anything that is posted that tags the group to all the followers of the group. It's a way to engage in a special interest, without having to follow someone you otherwise have nothing in common with. Normally, if you just use a hashtag, that will only federate to instances you already have a connection with, but if you use the group, that will always boost to everyone following the group, which will help you get a better reach. Think of groups like a supercharged hashtag for the fediverse. If you like tamas, follow @tamagotchi and tag it in your tamagotchi posts and you'll be helping the group grow and reach out to more instances :blue_heart_sparkles:

• tama walk is really cool! I felt like on the Pix, the explore feature felt off, because the characters you met around your house or on a walk, were always based on the colors around you, so if you live int he netherlands and it's dark, you'll only get gray characters. In the new tama walk feature, you meet random tamas by wifi SSDs, which is hilarious and I love it. :tama_mimitchi:

• They have pets you can play with in the garden again and I love them so much :tama_pet: :blobhaj_hug:

• the games have gotten a bit of face lift and they're slightly harder now. The memory game has gotten better. Some of them involve movement like dancing too, which I also think is great for the target demographic, ages 6+.

• New characters are always fun to see and they've brought in all sorts of new helper and worker characters that are all precious :3 (I do feel weird about the bike delivery rider though... there's no option to tip)

• the clock is weirdly hard to get to, you know, for being a watch :blobhaj_blanket: you have to press and hold A, which I didn't understand for like a day

• @scremlin and I finally got to connect our tamagotchis and go on a playdate together. It was really cute just like every Tamagotchi that support connection: The tama comes over to one of your tamagotchis, and leaves the other person's entirely where they play together. It's adorable. We both had :tama_lionetchi: and when they play together, it makes them happy. I will try to get some footage later.

So, initial thoughts having only made it past baby phase to toddler...

• The screen viewing angle is very bad from anything other than directly head on.

• The sound is a lot more bit crushed and distorted. It's like the small speaker is being worked waaay too hard. It sounds awful compared to the Pix and On.

• After playing with the Tamagotchi Pix for a week, which has a capacitive touch indented button set that allows for gestures, this tamagotchi feels less interactive.

• The main menu also feels a little less done with love, and a little more generic.

• I don't know how I feel about achievements long term, but they are fun and novel right now.

:tamagotchi_uni: It is still large for a smart watch, but I feel like the Tamagotchi Uni is a normalish size watch for someone with normal sized wrists. My wrists are quite small though, so it looks a little larger on me than it would for most people.

So one of my first remarks is that it's so tiny compared to other Tamagotchis before it. The Tamagotchi Pix is the one that looks like an egg hatching, and it is just massive compared to the Tamagotchi On which is a little smaller, followed by the Tamagotchi Uni which is at least half or less the size of the other two.

The Tamagotchi Uni really feels like how you remember your Tamagotchi as a kid was (assuming you had a colorless Original Tamagotchi). I'm so impressed with how small the Uni is. I've never seen a color screen Tamagotchi so small.

As you can see, the Tamagotchi On Wondergarden (left) and the Tamagotchi Pix look totally different. I even dressed the Wondergarden up in a little green cat protective case to distinguish it.

I JUST FOUND MY TAMAGOTCHI ON! Fam, you don't understand. I hadn't run a tamagotchi in 3 years and I only recently picked up the Tamagotchi Pix to run it because I mentioned Tamagotchi at work recently and I grabbed the one I had sitting on a shelf in a display case.

Apparently I had a lunch box with another Tamagotchi stash that I totally forgot about. I thought I lost the previous ones in a move, but I have it! I also got the Tamagotchi Pix and On confused, and so for the past hour I've been trying to figure out how to unlock a location that is completely not possible on the Pix.

Oh god, do I feel like such a loser. Can you believe I confused the Pix and the On? One of them has a camera... what am I doing with my life?
