"#Poor #mothers are often laying on the precipice of #houselessness due to a #welfare
system that fails to support them and their #children. #Evictions are one mechanism
through which the state has successfully unhoused women and children. Following the
repeal of Rule 1 (#evictionprotections) in October 2020, evictions in #LACounty increased
(7) by 172% . Studies have shown that having children can significantly increase the
likelihood of a household being evicted. #Singlemothers, especially #Blackmothers, are in
an even more precarious situation given the employment and wage disparities that
make their ability to pay #rent and obtain stable housing more difficult.
Mothers are further impacted by economic status as it is used by the #DepartmentofChildrenandFamilyServices (#DCFS), to justify ongoing surveillance and violence which has led to evictions, the inability to access future housing and the inability to make
decisions on their child’s well-being. DCFS has not only pushed families into
houselessness but has a long violent history of #surveillance and policing within #SkidRow
specifically and has made efforts to displace Skid Row residents from their #community
under the guise of help. As of 2020, #LosAngeles County consisted of only 7% of Black
(8) children and yet, 24% of #Blackchildren were removed from their families by DCFS ."
