  1. CW: re: mobile device meta, pinephone et al, darkpi

@Truck honestly, this is why I've been building an SBC luggable for the last few years (see darkpi.com/).

    Hardware is relatively easy.

Hardware aesthetics are less easy (especially in compact-and-pretty-enough package for the "smartphone" fans).

But it's the software and updating and security processes therein that are the really hard engineering problem.

And tbqh, there's nothing consumer-ready...even my personal "better option" (the #DarkPi) is in pieces between the office, our hardware engineer, and my homelab-away-from-home.

Hardware bits aside, this month has been the kickoff for rebuilding everything from the ground up in #NixOS (from bog-standard Raspbian (err, raspiOS or whatever, it's been our prototype platform since the beginning) & shell scripts), because declarative package management solves most of the problems with reproduceably useful systems.

We're focusing on facilitating secure communications/collaboration inside our organization (see gitea.com/nuneco/irregular.tea for our functional requirements), and I expect it to take another 1-3 years before it's consumer-testing-ready.

Part of my point here is that you're right...there are no good options out there, and my particular whinge (modular parts would have fixed Pinephone's lcd problem at the component level, like so much other monolithic BS) is older than Project Ara.

Idk if that gave a bit of perspective, but that's where I'm at with this.

  2. CW: darkpi tl:dr, goodnight

Fund the #DarkPi modular portable computer project, and you support a decade of efforts to create ethical computing and durable housing for refugees.

It's a long road between here and those goals, and I'm 2/3 of the way through barfing this business plan pitch onto paper, but I just can't brain anymore.

    Happy #solstice y'all.

I hope this was as informative for you, dear reader, as it was cathartic for us.

  3. CW: darkpi pitch, boosts appreciated.

The #DarkPi is an intentionally open, intentionally repairable, and intentionally hackable concept.

The #GoFundMe precedes talking with investors, because I'd rather give good tech to good people than have to constantly protect it from the bad.

Technology should serve and enable the user, rather than undermine and sell their privacy piecemeal.

Technology should be accessible, and be easy to make more accessible.

Producers of technology are often too far disconnected from their userbase.

    Boost this.
Post it to your birbsite and fakebook alts.
Post it on forums, tell your meatspace friends about it.

Ask us hard questions, we never know what to say here.

This is technology for refugees, by refugees.
This is technology for the homeless,
    built by someone experiencing homelessness.
This is technology for the disabled,
    by individuals with disabilities.

tl:dr - Help intersectionally-minded small business break into the portable device market.

  4. @Pyretta waaaaaayyy back when I was designing theatre props, the idea of having an augmented reality wearable to contextualize the chaos around me motivated me towards what would later become the #DarkPi project.

I've already got a rather wide array of sensing kit (location & orientation among them), and one of the much-needed tools for the Thorn Valley Badlands Test Site is ad-hoc collaborative mapping.

A utility that, with the user's permission, contributes height data to a meshmap accessible via all locally networked devices, is in the stretch goals for v1+, and knowing that navigation tools are important to you is great feedback!

  5. CW: accessibility meta, ownership, site redesign

The design of the DarkPi site is, admittedly, a contrivance of our own, and our sysadmin aesthetic is showing a bit.

    darkpi.com/

What we don't know, however, is whether this site is accessible for assistive aids, like screen readers or other browser accessibility aids.

Going to be doing some research on this, because if I'm asking questions of your disability, knowing the topic before engaging is how we try to demonstrate respect.

However, if anyone who uses an accessibility mode for interacting with sites has immediate thoughts on that matter (regarding tools to test with, paradigms to consider, or a critique of the current presentation of the information, etc), we're listening and would be delighted to integrate your feedback.

Added a few pictures of projects-in-progress to the Ko-Fi albums, and there's also a new blogpost on the #DarkPi.

  7. CW: First day poll leaders(s): Metalworking, DarkPi Dev

More metalworking and cybredecking it is, then.

Today I photodocumented the first bits of a rolling mini-forge, and prepped the office for doing #DarkPi stuffs. I'll be posting those pics on Tuesday, because I left the datadapter at the office, and tomorrow is taking partner to pain clinic day.

    Also, moar patreon post patreon.com/posts/32441303/

    Bedtime nao.

  8. ...ummm...help me out here fediverse...

    A cybredeck is...
...kinda any portable nonstandard computer-ish amalgamation of parts that does things?

Found this a while again a thread on the things, along with the personal realization that the #darkpi is a cybredeck.

  9. CW: re: thorn valley, projects adjacent

@CoronaCoreanici @woozle the core purpose is creating sustainable, open source, user-repairable, robust, accessible, secure housing.

The current phase of the project, while the land is inaccessible for the winter months, is to document the various subsystem and prototype builds, and create schematics for the housing units for sharing with collaborators and allies.

The three main foci are the comms/media/storage system (#darkpi), the metalworking bits (#microfoundry), and using the aforementioned bits for building a wilderness-ready service truck out of a motor home.

  10. CW: thorn valley, ongoing update, boosts appreciated

Let's talk about real estate for a moment.

    ---
    Last year, we acquired land.

Land, like creatures, cannot be owned, only taken care of for a while.

    ---
This land is high-desert badlands, with environmental factors like the double-digits-below-zero winter cold, water scarcity, and the lack of a centralized power grid.

This winter, we're focusing on software for the #darkPi hardware, and formalizing the group governance as is becomes more than just a circle of friends.

  11. I need to test a network thing.

How many of y'all have a Raspberry Pi that could temporarily run a custom image on my behalf?

Looking for 3+ volunteers but in theory there's no upper limit.

    #darkpi

  12. @thor I've noticed the same thing with Asus router hardware, but all of mine is...old.

I use Mikrotik for everything now.
Once #darkpi is...re-un-broken...I'll add some netstats stuffs so I can figure out if there's a similar decline in the RouterOS stuffs that hardware is running.

  13. CW: financial need, immediate, uspol mention

    Justice costs money.

I need $3,500 to beat the criminal and civil charges against me, and $6k to file charges against the officers who assaulted and brutalized me on the 4th.

Please, if you cannot contribute, share here and on other social media.

    I prefer LiberaPay:

But, I also have a GoFundMe:

    Anything helps.

    #DarkPi online soon.

  14. I've got the bits for the next iteration of the #DarkPi:Trio sitting in my tent behind me, and an assortment of tools to make rapid prototyping possible.

Don't hold your breath, but June (2018) may be the month I finally release the first public specs/partslist/code.

Have you got an SD card for your Raspi Zero W?

    >_>

...or, yaknow, any of the other models.

Because, you should dig one out, it may be useful soon.
