Li Shan High Mountain. Taiwanese oolong from a long ago Eco-Cha tea club shipment.

Zhenghe Red from White2Tea, Fujian varietal usually used for white tea was used to produce a black tea.
-
Zhenghe Red from White2Tea is a Fujian tea. It is a black tea made from a varietal usually used for Fujian white tea, "Zhenghe Dabai". Darker herbaceous and fruit flavors, more raisins than stonefruit.
-
2020 Snowflake (fall) Yashixiang (Duckshit) Phoenix Township Dancong Oolong from One River Tea. Going places.
-
2023 Sichuan Gan Lu (probably not meng ding) from White2Tea. Umami, light flavor, returning sweetness. A very clean green tea.
-
A new bag of (slightly vintage) 2023 Cloud Mist Green tea from White2Tea. A regular member of their annual spring green mob, their Sichuan Cloud Mist Green is subtle, slightly herbal, with a touch of narcissus and lingering tingling energy.

There are advantages to compulsively including additional bags of tea you enjoy in orders. For example while everyone else complained to White2Tea about them not making Daily Jinjunmei black tea last year, I could quietly drink down my 4 bags (and distribute some to friends)...
-
A single 7g sample of this "ANZAC" 2024 Huangpian blend from White2Tea. Probably included in another order. Softer flavor, some astringency in later steeps. Lingering tongue tingles and pleasant aftertaste. (Left out on the table, knocked off by cat, someone apparently thought it was some sort of chew toy. Didn't seem to affect the flavor.)

2021 Spring Laos Green from One River Tea. This was a green tea when I got it, now the leaves have faded to brown. A bit like aged raw Liu Bao, farmer tea. Sweet, with a touch of smoke.
-
It's after easter, time to move on to green teas! Book Cover Green (2023) is a blend of "less picturesque leaves" from a Sichuan producer that White2Tea sources other single variety green teas from. Basically green tea Huang Pian.
-
Wenshan Baozhong is a very low oxidation oolong. This "Competition Grade" sample came from the (Taiwan based) Eco-Cha tea club in 2020 or 2021. It drinks like an extra floral green tea. Oddly, even though it is low oxidation and little to no roast, you sometimes see aged versions of Wenshan Baozhong.

Since I always say White2Tea's Arbor Red is black tea for puerh drinkers, I was curious to see how Arbor Red would react to brewing in Jiri Duchek Rye stoneware, instead of the usual ruyao gaiwan, would affect the tea. (I usually only brew young raw puerh in Duchek Rye stoneware.) My initial impression is it makes a huge difference, smoothing the rough edges of the tea. Maybe a little too much?

Enjoying my remaining Dancong samples from the MyTeaPal club, as the heyday of direct shipped cheap goods from China winds down. Gong Xiang Dancong, a lighter roast processed tea.

Dancong Oolong are often called after a fragrances they evoke, sometimes these fragrances are familiar to Western audiences, sometimes they are not. This Po Tou Xiang Dancong from MyTeaPal is one of the "not". Supposedly evocative of the flowers of Chinese Violet (Telosma cordata), I've got no frame of reference for the scent. It is a very nice!

My wife is out of town, so I can enjoy this burly black tea from White2Tea on Saturday morning. 2018 Arbor Red is a bit smoky, a bit bitter, touch of returning sweetness; definitely a black tea for people who enjoy aggressive raw puerh.

Xizihao Daughter mostly sells raw puerh, but they also sell ripened puerh and the odd Black tea batch. I don't know much about this 2022 "Wild Black" other than it is from "Unmanaged Gardens" somewhere in Vietnam. It has the fruity character I associate with Yunnan sun dried black tea and good durability/length of flavor. A good zippy morning cup.

Red Saturday, the return of White2Tea's Honey Needle Yunnan black tea.
-
Jinjunmei black tea was initially created as a premium bud only tea from a limited geographic region in Fujian targeted at the luxury tea market. A lot of producers now make Jinjunmei-like teas sourced from other regions and with less exacting pick standards. White2Tea's "Daily Jinjunmei" is one of those (though it is from roughly the same region as "real" jinjunmei). Dark stonefruit, herbs, and brown sugar are my tasting notes for Daily Jinjunmei from White2Tea.
-
Yong Chun Fo Shou from MyTeaPal is a very green Fujian oolong , low oxidation and little to no roast. Enjoyable and perfume forward, more in modern Anxi or Taiwan style than Wuyi.
-
Last of the Yanhong black tea from White2Tea. Onwards!
-
Oops, I thought Black Jade from Volition Tea Co was a black tea, but it is a Dancong Oolong. A tasty Dancong Oolong!

When your honey asks for more Honey Needle, you order more Honey Needle!
(Honey Needle black tea from White2Tea.)
-
"Yanhong Black" is an "everyday black" Fujian tea from White2Tea. I.e. reasonable price, available in larger bags, interesting enough to drink every day, but not over complex.
-
OK, I ordered a new batch of Honey Needle today from White2Tea. Here's hoping it makes it into the US!
-
Mrs Flannestad has developed a fondness for White2Tea's Honey Needle Yunnan black tea just as the bag is getting low.
-
Stomach a little off this morning, couldn't face serious Yunnan black tea. Went with a soothing bud heavy Fujian black tea instead, 2022 Silver Bud Red from White2Tea.
-
Arbor Red (2018) is one of White2Tea's earlier experiments using raw puerh material and lighter oxidation to make a black tea. A burly complex smoky black tea for puerh drinkers. One of my favorites of their teas, they made it for a few years, 2018-2020. Tight compression means it is aging slowly and well preserved.
-
@teapot_ben Still enjoying Honey Needle, trying brewed gongfu this time. It has a very pure flavor!

Last full dose of Yunnan Sourcing sun dried black tea with snow chrysanthemum flowers.

A big mug of uncomplicated Yunnan black tea from Yunnan Sourcing, (2018 drunk on red w/snow chrysanthemum flowers).

A big mug of uncomplicated Yunnan black tea. A blend of the Mud and Leaves Azure Spring and Yunnan Sourcing Drunk on Red black tea cakes.

One of my favorite teas to drink when I'm under the weather is this blend of sun dried Yunnan black tea and snow chrysanthemum flowers, called "Drunk on Red". Yunnan Sourcing made this tea for a few years from around 2013 to 2018, but as far as I've seen 2018 was the last year. (They also made a plain version and a version with osmanthus flowers.)

This "2017 prize winning smoked hong cha" (aka Lapsang Souchong aka Zhengshan xiaozhong) is one of the first teas I ordered direct from China. Thankful to have embarked on this tea journey.

If you're looking for a company that sells high quality Chinese tea and ships from the US, Minnesota based Verdant Tea is a good one to investigate. This is a Dark Roast Anxi Rou Gui Oolong.
-
Still wandering through my teaware looking for the best way to brew Dancong Oolong consistently. This is a nice Honey Orchid Dancong from MyTeaPal Club. Maybe brewing Dancong consistently isn't in my skill set?

Some nice Ya Shi Xiang Dancong Oolong via the MyTeaPal Club.

This is a bottom of the bag blend of roasted Taiwanese oolong from Eco-Cha, red Taiwanese oolong from Mud and Leaves, and roasted Anxi oolong from Verdant Tea. Pretty good, actually.
-
Several years back I was in a tea club from Taiwanese based company Eco-Cha. This is a very nice Roasted Tsui Yu Oolong Tea from that club.
-
One River Tea calls this "2021 Spring Laos Green", but really it is old tree, big leaf (assamica) tea, so pretty much raw puerh maocha. Laos (and Thailand) puerh style teas can be very good leaf material. This tea has good fast energy, but is not overly complex. Happily it has mellowed some since the last time I tried it.

Oolong Sunday. Taiwanese Roasted Tsui Yu Oolong from a long ago Eco-Cha tea club shipment.
-
Mapo is one of One River Teas regular green teas. From Hubei in Jianshi County, Mapo is quite nice, Mao feng-esque. This is a sample they sent me along with another order.
-
Last full dose of Golden Green tea from One River Tea.
-
Dark Roast Anxi Ruan Zhi from Verdant Tea is a very enjoyable dark roast Anxi oolong! More complex than most, not just roast flavor.
-
Enjoyed a previous year's version of Golden Green Hunan green tea from One River Tea a lot, giving the 2022 batch a try. It's bigger buds than most of the green tea I've been drinking lately, so the initial 190 F was a bit low, up to 200 F for later batches. Nice meaty green tea.
-
Dark Roast Anxi Ruan Zhi Oolong from Verdant Tea. Very nice dark roast oolong, toasty dark roast scent and oolong flavor peeking out from beneath. If you're looking for a company that ships high quality Chinese tea in the US, Verdant Tea is a good one to try.

Nearing the bottom of this bag of Taiwanese red oolong from Mud and Leaves.

2023 Azure Spring Yunnan Sun Dried Ancient Tree Black Tea is from a Taiwan based producer via Mud and Leaves. Less aggressive than I expected, quite mellow dark stone fruit flavor, but with strong, fast energy. Zip, zap, zoom!

DalunShan Red High Mountain Oolong from Mud and Leaves. As I have mentioned before, I always find Taiwanese red oolongs (and Taiwanese red/black teas generally) to be comfort teas. They are easy to brew with their low astringency and bitterness. Nearly impossible to oversteep, I often brew them quasi-gongfu with an in mug filter. Here, I am brewing in a stoneware pot.
