  1. Well, I know what *I’m* going to be watching most of this month… 23 movies and 18 episodes of Tanner ‘88.

“Born one hundred years ago, Robert Altman made movies that play like the cinematic equivalent of jazz—elastic, improvisational, and thrillingly alive to chance and happenstance... Imitated by many, matched by none, Altman’s films are worlds unto themselves, teeming with more humanity than a single story can contain.”

  2. Watching "Party Girl." Peak '90s indie cinema, from the clothes to the music to the minimal sets to the simple lighting setups. You can clock the '90s of it all from the slide-in credits sequence alone.

  3. One of my favorite movies, Midnight (1939), is currently on the Criterion Channel.

It’s a fun take in the Cinderella story, with delightful performances by the legendary John Barrymore, a young Don Ameche, and academy award winning actress Claudette Colbert.

It’s absolutely worth a watch if you have access to it.

  5. watching DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE on #CriterionChannel

I've seen it before but now it has even more significance in a way. What a special and wholly unique person and artist.

  6. "Is all that we see or seem, but a dream within a dream?"

Having just seen it, The Beast, 2023, seems, in part, to be asking much the same question.

And I've never experienced end credits like these.

An original mix of period drama, sci-fi, and stalker flick that I'll need explained (I'm not bright in that way), I enjoyed it overall despite pacing, unexplained elements, and time jumping.

  11. A lot of movie packed into 42 minutes; make sure to watch all the way through past the credits.

I can't describe it well. Buñuelesque at times, it's a celebration, exploration, and extension of the art of cinema, an indictment of people and our times, and I'm not sure what all else was being conveyed.

Very good and extremely worthwhile if you love abstract, impressionistic expressions of the art form.

It replays at 10pm Eastern tonight.

  12. I had #France in my #CriterionChannel queue since it hit the service in 2021, and I finally watched it yesterday.

    #LéaSeydoux is great in service of a #movie that's a dash of #Cassavetes, a pinch of #VanSant, a dollop of #FrenchNewWave, and likely many more references/homages I missed.

It's a disjointed #film that feels like a musical composition with a central structure that veers off into disparate solos before returning to its core, and has an ending that seems to punish the main character.

  13. Less than two weeks to watch one of Ida Lupino’s favorite performances on Criterion Channel: the proto-noirish thriller “Ladies in Retirement” (1941)

  14. One of my all-time favorite thrillers, “Ladies in Retitement” (1941), is currently streaming on #CriterionChannel as part of their Noir By Gaslight collection. As it’s a Columbia Pictures production, it doesn’t get much play elsewhere (*cough* TCM), so this is a great opportunity.

Wonderful cast headed by Ida Lupino in her personal favorite role. Great atmospheric direction and cinematography by Charles Vidor and George Barnes.

  15. Brian Donlevy and Glenda Farrell in the very enjoyable comedy-drama about a deep sea cable diver, “High Tension” (1936). I found this in the #CriterionChannel Allan Dwan collection, but I’m surprised I didn’t find it earlier.

I’ve now seen 55 of the 73 Glenda Farrell films and should resume trying to track down the remainder—particularly the handful from the 1930s.

  16. Edith Barrett, Ida Lupino and Elsa Lanchester in the thriller, “Ladies in Retirement” (1941)

Reminder that this is now on Criterion Channel as part of their Noir By Gaslight collection!

  17. Just realized the Criterion Channel has more Ishirō Honda films besides the Godzilla ones. Got a bunch of classics I’ve never seen.

    First up, The Mysterians!

“Why is an astrophysicist like you working in the countryside anyway?”

  22. Until a few months ago I didn't know that #HBO/ #Max has an excellent library of #classic and #ArtHouse #films.

    Titles like: #Vampyr, #81/2, #BattleshipPotemkin, #M, #ThePassionOfJoanOfArc, #PantherPanchali, #MyNeighborTotoro, #BlackOrpheus, #Stalker, #WarAndPiece (all 4 volumes), #Ugetsu, #Z, #BlackGirl and a LOT more.

It's a catalog worthy of the #CriterionChannel, if you need to save money.

When I gush about #MCU and other #pop #movies, I'm using my spotty knowledge of a century of #movies

  23. IMHO, one of the best #films and collection of films is found on #CriterionChannel in the collection: WOMEN MAKE FILM

First, there's the amazing 14-part #documentary by one of my favorite filmmakers, Mark Cousins, called WOMEN MAKE FILM. Then that's followed by a number of films by the filmmakers mentioned in the documentary spanning the history of #cinema.

  24. Jan Sterling, Ray Milland and the cat playing the title character of “Rhubarb” (1951) — a silly cat/baseball/caper movie on #CriterionChannel for a few more days as part of their screwball comedy collection

  25. I just watched STUMP THE GUESSER and I think it's my favorite Guy Maddin joint I've seen yet. It's a dizzying, often comical sensory overload and deliciously compact at 20 minutes long. If you have the Criterion Channel then be sure to queue this up for tonight — I believe it's gone from the service tomorrow. → youtu.be/J51zLyjWQlg

  26. We watched "Big Brown Eyes" the other night via Criterion Channel. Apparently not much appreciated on its release in 1936, both the Mrs and I thoroughly enjoyed. Snappy dialogue, good cast, cool cinematography. Also amazingly efficiently done with its running time of around an hour. Left you wanting more. Directed by Raoul Walsh with Cary Grant, Joan Bennett, and Walter Pidgeon.

  27. @sheepchase @avibenavi

    It's currently on #CriterionChannel along with #LetTheRightOneIn and many other vampire flicks like #TheHunger, the #LesVampires silents, #Dracula 1931, #Nosferatu and #NosferatuTheVampyre, #NearDark, #IrmaVep 1996 and several more.

Many of these are leaving the service December 31 though.

  28. Last night's #CriterionChannel #ScrewballComedy was 1937's "Easy Living." The Sturges screenplay isn't so crisp, and it may be director Leisen's first stab at comedy, and it shows. Jean Arthur is a delight throughout, Edward Arnold does most of the other acting work (Ray Milland may as well be a hatrack for all he's given to do), several of what would be the Sturges stock company appear, and I was pretty sleepy anyway so won't judge it too harshly.
