Mixed #CoverCrop #seeds. I use them as part of ongoing #SoilRemediation work. I'll sow these mixed seeds after removing lawn grass & working lime & compost soil into the earth, covering with more soil & a thin layer of leaf mulch. The alternative cover crop roots feed & naturally aerate the earth they grow out of. I then remove most of the cover crops & sow/transplant food & pollinator plants in same spot.

A month ago I mixed compost into the soil in my 30 gallon fabric growing bags and planted a winter cover crop of winter rye and hairy vetch. I’m always amazed that these seeds can germinate and grow in the cold.
Hairy vetch is a legume and fixes nitrogen in the soil. I’ll compost and/or dig these plants back into the soil next May.
I think the first photo is the winter rye and the second that has redish highlights and more of a spiral wrap is the hairy vetch.

Now and forever, organic fertilizer smells TERRIBLE.
That moment when the manure is the better smelling bag you open
Cover crop mix is in the ground!

Let's talk cover crops!
Looking for a good one(s) to add organic matter to very sandy soil, for new garden beds.
Ideally one quick spring one and also a season-long plan for another bed.
I'm zone 6, southeast Michigan (US)All ideas welcome!

reminder, phacelia makes a wonderful annual cover crop. Pollinators love it. Blooms in spring. Not fussy about soil. Breaks down quickly. Native in North America.

Summer cover crops are much more photgenic than the winter ones

Worked on #sowing more #CoverCrop #seeds for #SoilRemediation & #rewilding our yards. I'll update later on the plant seeds sowed - pretty big list. Both of these blends are #beneficial for #PollinatorGardens too. Many are also #edible for humans & wildlife. Sourced from #SmallFarmers ✌👩🌾

I just took a #soilhealth class at my local library and here are some #interesting things I learned:
- Soil & Water Dep's were started because of the Dust Bowl
- Soil loss is the no.1 polluter in #NC
- 200 farms left in my county and the depr encourages #NoTillFarming and #CoverCrop
- #Soil tests rec every 3 yrs and ID Ph, micro, and macro nutrients
- Our area doesn't test for N as it's usually not a problem in our clay and loamy soil
- Phosphorus is the biggest issue to address here
- Con't...
