I have recently surprised myself on occasion by saying or thinking, "I hate computers." After this had happened a few times I had to give it some thought, because I was simultaneously eagerly awaiting the arrival of my MNT Reform Next, buying books on Python, databases, and other computer-related topics, and happily maintaining the computers and networking equipment of my home network.

It took little time to realize that what I mostly actually meant was, "I hate the Internet." (And occasionally, that I hate the one Mac among my Linux systems.)

It is sad to me that there are people alive today who are too young to have ever experienced the Internet as something that was both fun and useful. It is sad to me that there are people like me who DID experience that, and now have to deal with the malicious, useless mess that it has been consciously converted into by people seeking money and power.

But now I remind myself that no, I do not hate computers. I can still enjoy learning ever more about them. I can still enjoy doing fun and/or useful things with them locally. (Even on the Internet, I can still enjoy the Fediverse!)

I think that my next "loving computers" project will be designing a database to track all of my sheet music and songbooks, and a front end in Python (because, though I'm more familiar with C and a couple of other languages, the recent Python Foundation decision on not pursuing a US government grant is still giving me warm fuzzies).

So thank you, computers, for all the joy and fascination that you have given me over the years, and can still provide, at least locally. And thank you, people of the Fediverse, for keeping one corner of the Internet fun and useful!

But I call it policy-driven RAG:
where rules, not model weights, decide when my local LLM answers from the doc corpus and when it’s allowed to use general knowledge.

Basically:
“Stay in your lane unless I say otherwise.”
RAG for homelab stuff
LLM for the wider world
Never phones home

Might be old hat to the pros, but it absolutely blew my geek mind that it actually works.
