  1. Should I have used mitered corners on these panels?

    Yes

    Do I care?

    No

Sure it would have reduced some bulk in the corners of the panels, but it sits well enough in the pants leg when it's sewn on that I don't care.

This is a personal project to add some protective panels to my riding pants (front and back) to try and prevent tearing (in the pants or in my leg) if my foot slips on my mountain bike pedals (flat pedals with studs IYKYK).

    Three more to sew on!

  2. Need to make a quick and easy plumb bob?

Grab a piece of line (I'm using paracord) and a carabiner (you probably already have one in a drawer somewhere from some promotional keychain from a product booth).

Tie a bowline knot at the end of the line to form a simple loop. Slide the loop into the carabiner.

The loop being loose will allow the line to center itself at the end of the carabiner when you drop it down, and even a small carabiner should provide enough weight.

  3. The answer is yes, an 8 foot piece of aluminum square tubing will fit in my car.

On that note, I have secured the tubing!

  4. Hmm… ideally I need a little bit more aluminum tubing to do what I want (to get extra height), but I’m learning that trying to find anodized aluminum square tube is pretty difficult in Canada : /

My local Home Depot actually has some, but it’s in an 8 foot length and I don’t know if it will fit in my car. They won’t cut it in half for me : (

And those black connectors to build out a frame are basically impossible to find in Canada : /

  5. This is going to be fun!

Too be fair this is overkill for my house network needs (though not by as much as you might expect lol…), but I got most of this early last year at a significant discount (that it was basically free really) over retail price so… time for some upgrades to integrate with the rest of my UniFi networking bits : )

The UDM Pro is going to be used for the controller software only. PFSense is staying as my perimeter firewall.

  6. Getting ready to repurpose the aluminum from my folding@home/crypto-mining/password-cracking rig I built years ago (circa 2011/2012 maybe?).

Going to cut the aluminum down a bit to make a small 19” frame for my networking gear in my basement.

  7. As I realise the date is December 18th, I fear once again that my ambition is greater than the time available 😟

  8. Ahhhhhhh I did it it’s finished and it came out soooo good it’s currently the best thing I’ve ever sewed I’m so happy with it omgbuamabshshsgsh!!!

  9. Well that was an annoying mistake… forgot to sew the pockets onto the inner liner of this tote bag before I sewed the two halves of the inner liner together.

Just got creative with the free arm and attached one pocket and it’s laying fine.

Time to try to repeat success with the other pocket 😅 and remember next time to sew those pockets on first!

  10. Here we go again... I want to make a custom sized bag for a specific item, so am I going to learn and practice with boxed corners first?

No of course not. I'm going straight into "I want this bag to have a consistent depth top to bottom so guess I'm going to learn what a gusset is" instead because why not start with the more advanced technique I mean really

    #claireMakes

  11. I have limited space so I made this folding pressing mat to use while I sew.

Does it look professionally finished? Absolutely not.

    Is it perfect? Also no.

But is it functional and halfway decent considering it’s my first time sewing around rounded corners, making and sewing on edge binding, while sewing through layers that are about 1/4” thick and the inside has two 14”x20” pieces of 1/8” MDF so I couldn’t fold it while sewing at the machine… Yes it is!

  12. When I learn a new technique or skill for the first time do I learn it on a simple project first?

No of course not why would I do that I have to try it on the hardest bloody use case imaginable because that’s the “object” that exists in my head that I feel the need to make manifest so one way or another we’re getting through it.

  13. The pieces are all cut, chiseled, drilled, and test fitted and it all fits together.

Now just need to finish rounding the edges and sanding.

Then I need to figure out how I’m actually going to glue this up when it’s far wider than any clamps I currently have : /

    I’m thinking ratchet straps…

  14. First test fit of the top shelf into one of the legs.

Progress! I think that looks pretty decent!

Now to cut the rabbet in the other leg

  15. Ok so many not “entirety” function over form but I figured I might as well get some additional practice in on actually jointing with hand tools versus just screwing boards to each other

    #claireMakes

  16. I have purchased some cheap (well cheap but still expensive compared to wood prices a few years ago) pine to start the build later this afternoon.

Very much going for a function over form build with this one

  17. They’re not great pictures so I don’t know how well this will show… but here’s the before (top) and after (bottom) from cleaning and reconditioning my leather baseball glove yesterday.

This glove has never been cleaned or reconditioned since I got it when I was around 10 (28 years ago!).

I think it came out pretty well! It even regained a bit of its original shape when laid on its side instead of being fully collapsed.

  18. Since I had to pull my wrenches out to remove my old bike pedals, I figured now was the time to clean them up and give them the same painted treatment as I did on my sockets a few weeks ago.

    I love how this looks!

  19. Much better than the lug nuts bouncing about in the storage container!

  20. Minor update:

Did a little bit of further investigation into the machine.

There’s going to be a bit of work to do to clean up and restore this machine to working order.

The presser foot mechanism is pretty gummed up inside with old oil and dirt. The lever will move the presser foot up, but not back down.

Near as I can tell though all the correct parts and mechanisms are still on the machine (with the exception of a bobbin)

  21. I am in LOVE with how well this cape turned out!!!

Edit: I forgot to mention that the graphics on the purple fabric glow in the dark!!

    #claireMakes #totalClaireityPrideFlagCape

  22. The pride flag side of my pride cape is basically done! I think it looks pretty great!

    Next steps are:

-Trim the short sides to even them up a bit
    - Pin it to the fabric for the backside
    - Cut and sew
    - Turn right side out
    - Roll the top edge and sew to create an opening for a piece of paracord to use to secure the cape when worn

    #claireMakes #totalClaireityPrideFlagCape

  23. I mean it’s not super straight (hehehe) but as a first time sewing project (and also without a pattern aside from what I tried to create and still got wrong lol) I think it came out pretty decent!

    #claireMakes #totalClaireityPrideFlag

  24. Backpack all done!

I didn’t take a before picture because… well I just forgot lol, but here it is.

I replaced all the original zipper pulls with these that I tied from 550 paracord, and I replaced the laced front with the red paracord.

Tried to use some colours that would go well with the original bag colours, but also wanted to give a pop of pink somewhere so opted to put those on the two side pockets.

    I dig it!

    #claireMakes

  25. I felt like the cover needed a little something so I reused one of my “failed” vinyls I made a couple of years ago for another project 😁

  26. Learning FreeCAD to design my own projects to 3D print is opening up so many opportunities!

This is a fitted dust cover for my sound mixer held onto the mixers baseplate with embedded magnets in the print.

  27. One of the plastic bird food/water dishes broke in one of our bird cages, and you can't buy the same type of dishes individually from the makers of the cage.

I spent a bit of time today making a 3D model in FreeCAD so I can hopefully print a new one.

This is my first model of this level of complexity, so we'll find out tomorrow if it's printable or not 🤞

  28. Before and after of the refinished mirror!

I’m of two minds whether I should do a coat of the Clear Wax over the paint… mainly because I forgot I was going to do a coat of Clear Wax and only remembered after I already had all the masking tape and paper off… lol

    #claireMakes #totalClaireityMirrorRedo

  29. I’m going to a ren fair this weekend (first time ahhhhh!!!) but my costume doesn’t have any pockets.

So I made a small shoulder bag out of some pieces of scrap leather to put my cell phone in.

I know it’s not “perfect”, but this is my first time #leatherworking and I’m pretty proud of it 😊

Besides, I wanted it to have a pretty “rustic” look and I think I achieved that.
