The best part of my work day so far (WFH alone today) has been going out to feed their #Chookesties and see that our Baby (mini wyandotte) has laid an egg after months of being on strike.
And also enjoying all the bulbs peeking out and so many crocuses filling the garden with color.

Miss Baby is back in Broody Jail.
I had noticed she had spent about 2h in the nest already, so I went to check, she did the grrr-cluck-cluck so I gently took her out of the nest. She walked a bit, jumped on the log when I went back inside, and 10 minutes later was back in the nest. So I prepared her jail with food & water and sight on her sisters from another mother.
Last time she was in Broody Jail was in November 🙄

Bonnie, one of our hens, however, got super confused and was standing on the stairs to the coop in front of a closed door when I went out to close their feeder...

Happy to report that miss broody Baby is no longer broody, so we could let her back into the flock.
Which also means Betty and Bonnie are making it into the coop on time before the door auto closes. Since Baby is the night time alarm clock of the family.

A pigeon landed inside #Chookingham open run, their #Chookesties quickly reacted to get the intruder out of their turf.
That was a funny sight of our little Baby (no longer broody, the three days in broody jail worked), Betty & Bonnie, speed up and puff up to get that ugly flying thing off their home.

Tentatively positive that Baby is no longer broody.
She got out (escaped) broody jail yesterday while I was cleaning the run & coop, and behaved normally.
This morning she's out and about doing what chickens do.

#Chookingham now has a broody jail. We split off a couple m² in the closed run (with roof) with wire and put a smaller feeder & water-er.
Baby has been put in Broody Jail, and it is so sad seeing her doing the "I want out of here! I want back in the nest with my (non-existing) babies!"
Hopefully it won't take too long, she's already been broody for two days. (My watch just told me to chill the F)

If you offer the hens weeds or greens from your hand, the ladies think they're the best. Drop them to the ground, and they'll ignore them tho.
They also love mock strawberries https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potentilla_indica and go nuts when we offer some. So we exercise them by throwing the berries in random places of the run (also, Baby is slower, so we distract Betty and Bonnie by throwing one in a corner so we can throw a second one towards Baby).

It felt like a splurge adding a €45 tray to their #Chookesties #Chookingham Palace (aka, the chicken coop), but it makes cleaning it a breeze, less than 5 minutes!
Raking their run and filling the feeder & water adds 10 minutes. That means complete weekly maintenance is anywhere from 5 mins to 15 minutes.

As the youngest one (we think), Baby goes to bed about an hour before (official) sunset.
Betty & Bonnie, the slightly older two, often stay out for about an hour, checking their run and eating some more.

Random chicken thoughts:
- Baby (wyandotte) has the most adorable purring
- Betty is a bit of a complainer, and her distressed squawks are very sad
- Bonnie is a jumper and seems to be the most adventurous too (approaching feeding hands the most). She actually stepped on my feet & circled between my legs the other night when they got stuck out and I went to let them in.
- As a city person, I never know how freaking soft chickens are.
- I am kinda jealous of all those videos with hens that love to snuggle up to their human
- I have already pretty much asked that the next hens be raised from chicks at home (so hopefully they are more used to being handled) and probably all Wyandottes because they're so adorable.

Today marks the three weeks of getting Baby, Betty & Bonnie.
Today is also the first day we have had two (2!!!!) eggs from the ladies.
Now to make them understand they need to get in the coop on time at night 🥺

Throwing the question into the ether, hoping someone sheds some light:
The last few days at least one of the chickens has not gotten in the coop in time (door closes at 40lx), and is distressed that they're not in. Baby is usually always in, and purring / rrrr-ing calling for whomever is not in. This after a week of some shenanigans but always being in time.
What can we do to have them all three get in on time?

Tonight's chicken shenanigans:
Betty locked herself out of the coop. When I went out to check, she was perched on top of the feeder, singing her song, sounding actually scared(?).
I used a red lamp to let her see where to jump, and then point at the coop's door. Our three ladies are finally in the coop reunited and happy sounds were produced.
