  1. The temperatures at the #Arctic Circle seem to be abnormally ... abnormal. 80 degrees F / 27.0 C

Some weird dude on YT is talking about "solar flares" I don't know if this is related.

And so I'm looking up data, and the Arctic Sea Ice extent of loss (map / data) also appears to be really bad, on par w/2012 when Nigeria was flooding and Salem, OR too.

The subsidence #landslide that dammed up the #Chilcotin river was weather-related.

  4. Leaders from Tsilhqot'in National Government (TNG) are calling for gov to take action on saving salmon in the wake of the Chilcotin River landslide

TNG wants to see limits to commercial & rec fisheries after a landslide blocked the Chilcotin River for more than 5 days

Leaders emphasized the importance of salmon for First Nations communities & the role of interior habitats for the critical species

  5. #BritishColumbia #FirstNations are initiating an #emergency #salmon #TaskForce to investigate the impact on the #sockeye salmon due to last week’s #Chilcotin River #landslide.

“Chilcotin Rivers are kind of our identity,” Nits’ilʔin (Chief) Francis Laceese, Tl’esqox said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Same with the salmon, you know, that’s basically who we are. That’s our biggest food source.”

#Tŝilhqotin National Government (TNG) is calling on all levels of government, downstream First Nations, the #PacificSalmonCommission, and other nations and states, especially #Alaskan #fisheries, to take all precautionary measures possible to conserve Tŝilhqot’in territory-bound salmon, and to immediately cease from fisheries that may impact these stocks, until the impacts from the landslide and breach are fully understood.

A massive landslide came down last Wednesday, damming the Chilcotin River, which leads into the #FraserRiver

  10. Reports are that the Fraser River is running at about Spring runoff flows at Lillooet on Tuesday morning, but with more debris than usual.

    #Chilcotin #Landslide #BC #BritishColumbia

  11. The #Chilcotin #Landslide #flood entered the Fraser River last night. At Big Bar Creek, discharge spiked from 1570 m3/s to a peak of 3640 m3/s, a 232% increase.

Water is now coming down there and is rising at Texas Creek near Lillooet. The surge will likely reach Hope later today.

    #BritishColumbia #BC

  12. If you're on FB then facebook.com/trevor.chelsea has some eye-popping aerial footage of the debris flow down the #Chilcotin River, including this reshaping the valley

  13. Latest from MLA Nathan Cullen an hour ago - the #Chilcotin debris (hard to call it "flood waters") have reached the Fraser - this video's taken at maps.app.goo.gl/gTr5XsPZoGeeLo - that puts it about 140km from Lillooet, a further 110km from Hells Gate, then another 50km to Hope.

Trying to guesstimate speed from the video that looks like 25-35kph!! Obvs will slow down in the wider Fraser now (I've no idea how much) but wow that must have caused some damage upstream and will do more downstream.

  14. Debris from the #Chilcotin slide is now reaching the Fraser River after bursting the blockage. This is a good birds-eye view from @lidragonette1 o er on the former Twitter. I wonder how long it takes for debris to reach the coast.

In any case, above the Fraser Valley, there will be some flooding, I hear. Stay safe out there.

  15. The apparatus for disseminating emergency information in #Canada is absolutely abysmal.

A radio broadcaster friend of mine tells me there's a flash flood emergency in place related to the #Chilcotin #Landslide but Environment Canada's website shows nothing and the BC River Forecast Centre hasn't updated their website since yesterday evening - well before water started flowing over the dam.

Water has been flowing for five hours now.

  16. If you're waiting for info about the #Chilcotin slide, water is now getting through the slide.
This video posted 3hrs ago by MLA Nathan Cullen over on birdsite.
I've stabilized it so it's easy to see what's going on.

  17. #Chilcotin #Landslide: The dam has broken and water is rushing out. It will take time to travel downstream and the impact will be less the further downstream one is. It doesn't appear to have been a catastrophic failure.

Expect muddier and higher streamflow with some debris to reach Hope sometime tonight. No flooding is forecast in the Lower Mainland but it is probably good to stay off the Fraser due to swift flow, debris, and low visibility beginning tomorrow.

    #BritishColumbia #BC #Vancouver

  18. #Chilcotin #Landslide - At 09:44 PT Monday the Tsilhqot'in government confirms a small amount of water is making it over the debris dam.

This is a dynamic situation. Anything from continued slow flows over the top to complete collapse of the structure is possible. I expect we'll come out somewhere in between.

    #BritishColumbia #BC

  19. #Chilcotin #Landslide - There are rumors that the Chilcotin River is overtopping the dam created by last week's landslide. I cannot stress enough that this is unconfirmed.

Even if it is accurate, it will likely take time (possibly hours) to get a clear view of what's going on.

Beware of misinformation. Don't share anything that isn't coming from a reasonable source.

  20. @rakslice

And, once this starts, the natural dam will be eroded by the overflow, and then it will burst in a major torrent.

Just like the Ice Age Floods.

    Just on a smaller scale.
