Rest in Peace, Cheetah Chrome
Cheetah Chrome, and Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta (then Mary Anne Christiano) at Max’s Kansas
Aw, man, Rest in Peace, Cheetah Chrome..
My friend Lisa (later known as Tomas) took this photo of me and Cheetah Chrome at Max’s Kansas, December 1980. (I was 18).
This picture was in the book “High on Rebellion” by Yvonne Sewall, who was a waitress at Max’s and married Mickey Ruskin who owned Max’s.
He was a super fun guy. He autographed Lisa’s car.
He was great to talk to, very opinionated about music, which I LOVE. Lisa asked him what he thought of bands like Depeche Mode, and he said, “Who the fuck are they?” I started cracking up.
He also made fun of Adam and the Ants. Cheetah was hilarious!
(Note, I do love Depeche Mode and Adam and the Ants, I just love when people make fun of music, especially when it’s musicians making fun of other bands — totally cracks me up when people are that passionate!)
Another time a friend of a friend had a radio show and I somehow had Cheetah’s phone number, so we went to his place in NYC together so the guy could interview him. The first thing I did when we got there was sift through his record collection. At 18, I was astonished to see that such a punk rocker had albums by Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. Not too long later I realized the beauty of having eclectic taste in music.
Then I got locked in Cheetah’s bathroom! How punk is that? Such a fun time. I was so shy and probably barely said a word. But I remember it so clear.
Cheetah was a great guy. I only had those two incidents with him. And my heart goes out to his loved ones. Only 71. A sad day for us punks and those of us who are still punk at heart. So glad I got to see him perform a few times at Dead Boys reunions and other gigs he did.And of course getting a short hang with him at the legendary Max’s Kansas and in his apartment in NYC.
Interesting side note, just two days ago I had on a Dead Boys CD. Their music always lives on.
