Chandrasekhar was born 116 years ago today! 🎉
In 1930, at just 19, while sailing from India to Cambridge, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar worked out a remarkable result: a white dwarf exceeding roughly 1.4 times the Sun’s mass could not remain stable.
Arthur Eddington publicly rejected his conclusion. But Chandrasekhar’s insight would reshape our understanding of stellar evolution.
53 years later, he was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physics for his theoretical studies of the physical processes governing the structure and evolution of stars.
A revolutionary idea born at sea. A legacy written in the stars. 🌌
