Tour de France – Stage 10 2026

On my fridge door is a magnetic bottle opener; it’s been there for years, since we came back from a holiday in the Auvergne region, camping in a small village not far from Aurillac, the town from which the Tour de France set off yesterday. My magnetic bottle opener is a souvenir from the Puy Marie, which was yesterday’s big Category 1 climb.

I remember driving up the Puy Marie and even then (so long ago that none of the photos from that trip are in my current Photos Library) there were commemorative signs related to past Tours de France, because the Puy Marie is one of those mountains they return to again and again. I don’t think, compared to Mont Ventoux etc., that it’s a particularly challenging climb for the modern rider, but it is iconic.

We parked by the road in the pass and then climbed to the top of the mountain. along the well-worn path. It was a bit like climbing the Ballon d’Alsace—a normally fit person could manage it. But the views were wonderful, as they were on the television yesterday: the helicopter shots of the peloton charging up the road.

Pogacar won, of course, just because he wanted to. I miss the days when the yellow jersey would just control the race from safe within the pack, and let other people go for glory. But Pog was determined that the breakaway riders wouldn’t have another day.

He was getting boos, apparently, which he called “logs for the fire.” I would never boo, but I’m kind of with the booers. Everything seems too easy for him. I don’t quite believe in the sincerity of his triumph as he crossed the line, alone. Ned Boulting was saying on his podcast, he’s a one-man team, literally ranking higher than quite a few of the actual teams.

We went camping down there because I was attracted by the interesting landscape of the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d’Auvergne. I saw them from the motorway on one of our long drives to the South, and I was determined to get in there.

What I didn’t realise, until its too late, that if you go camping to a region famous for its mineral waters, you are likely to discover where all that water comes from. The sky. And Aurillac itself, which we visited, turns out to be the umbrella capital of France. You could see them proudly displaying this yesterday in the drone-shot touristique video of Aurillac, with its central streets all shaded by umbrellas. Oh well, live and learn. Needless to say, we did not have the best weather.

Nothing like yesterday’s stage. It must have been exhausting, maybe not quite as hot, but still brutal, up and down all day long. And still technically a heatwave stage. My main personal issue with the stage, and a reason I didn’t enjoy it much, was because the online stream from France•TV was particularly irritating. More advert breaks than usual, it seemed to me, and longer. Even going so far as repeating all the adverts for a second time. I don’t know what was going. But you’d get about 5-10 minutes of the race and then fully 5 minutes of adverts looping over and over. In the end, I felt like I’d barely seen the race.

Stage 11 is flat. Maybe Pogacar will let someone else win.
