When I saw the #Commodore #Callback announcement, I was excited. The negativity it received from the community caught me off guard a little. It shouldn’t have as I can understand it given the history of cash grabs we’ve all seen.
But I love that they’re creating an alternative for a niche market that looks like a competitive offering in that space. Something that’s built on a principle I can relate to. The reaction outside the retro community seems to be very positive.

It seems #Commodore listened to the price complaints. They dropped the price of the Callback by $100 before the preorder opening. Now it’s $399. #callback8020 #callback

So yesterday I was visiting my octogenarian parents for Dad's day and while I was there Mum was complaining that her phone "got all messed up" and her phone numbers weren't where they used to be and how fiddly everything was now.
Turns out her moto phone got a major OTA update and the dialler and a bunch of the base apps changed their UI. And to be honeat it was a FUCKING MESS. The new UI is cluttered and confusing. The controls are too small and the layout makes no sense. It was change fir the sake of change. For a senior who isn't as mentally sharp as they used to be this is tantamount to abuse. It made me ANGRY.
My parents aren't shutins and are not technophobes. They want to stay connected, they like to play games or take pictures or listen to music, but they don't need the bullshit and don't need a fiddly touchscreen to make a damn phone call.
Anyways the point of my rant is that a lot of people asked who would ever want a #Commodore #Callback flip phone.
Well *I* want one. For Mum and Dad.

CW: Commodore Callback thoughts (and a tiny rant)
Jack Tramiel did not give people restricted tech and went: "Sorry we can't make it less expensive." Commodore, especially the 64, was like: "It's not how little it costs. It how much you get." At Atari with the ST it was "Power without the price." And at least when the new devices came out, there was truth to those claims.
This new phone by a new Commodore is not like that. It tries to solve a problem with tech that is caused by behavior, and charges you for it. And then they even go as far as making a blog post on their website about why the price is right, using LotR imagery and references.
Allow me to say this: Thinking a new reduced device will change a problem you have is like thinking diet Coke is the solution to your passion for sugary drinks: It maybe eliminates one factor out of the equasion, but that is not the solution to the underlying problem. Peri saying this would have been what he needed is, with all due respect, at least not thought-through.
The question is: Do you need your smartphone all the time? You go out for a jog or to ride a bike - why the hell do you need to track and share that with the world? You go around in your city - take a photo camera with you, leave the phone at home. If you really want a digital detox, don't say you need a new device for that.
I mean if you think it's for you, go for it. This rant is about the company. I just do not like the marketing here one bit, it's pretentious and bigot. And for me at least, it casts a shadow over what started as a crazy, but interesting restart of a brand that could have been very community oriented, and maybe even gone all in on new vintage tech in the modern age. As of now, it's on its way to gimmicky gadgets territory.

Commodore just announced a smart-dump minimalist flip-phone, running SailfishOS. I honestly think they're on the right track with all this less toxic technology stuff. No social media, or browsers (blocked at OS level) and no AI, but supports messaging with WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram and respects your privacy. It's not going to be cheap, but it's actually something I'd be interested in buying.
