  1. @MonaApp Anyone else using the Mona app running into this?

On the latest version (and this was also happening for me back on version 6), I’ll be typing—either with the standard iOS keyboard or Braille Screen Input—and the keyboard just randomly disappears. Then I have to go back, find the text field again, double tap, reposition my cursor… and sometimes it just drops the keyboard again. Rinse and repeat.

This makes it really tough to consistently write posts or replies, especially using VoiceOver.

Would love to see this fixed—Mona is great otherwise.

  6. Join us for the World Braille Day webinars, available in both French and English!

Hosted by AEBC, AERO, BLC, CCB, CELA, CNIB Beyond Print, CNIB Foundation, NNELS, and PRCVI, this workshop explores using the built-in braille features on mobile devices, including #brailleScreenInput.

Visit nnels.ca/world-braille-days-wb to register and learn more.

  7. Of all the features designed for blind users that are present on mobile devices, virtual braille input is, by far, the most powerful one.
Typing on a virtual representation of a physical [insert your keyboard layout here] keyboard works okay when you can see the keys, but when you're blind and use a screen reader, you have to explore the keyboard by touch. There are ways of making that process a little faster, but it's clunky and error-prone at best. Virtual braille input offers input based on relative finger positions instead of absolute input of a single finger. If you know braille, you can type. Talkback for Android and Voiceover for iOS both have this, though I'm only familiar with the apple version.
When you're on the go, you don't always have room for a physical keyboard, and the one the phone offers is very slow. Activate virtual braille input, and you can type and edit way faster than with normal commands. Get practice with them, and you can come pretty close to parity with traditional touchscreen typing input. it addresses the biggest pain point in using a phone without vision. Most of the swiping and tapping is pretty straightforward, sans inaccessible apps, but typing was always clunky at best. This isn't a perfect solution, but it's a massive improvement.

  24. @doubletap I almost hesitate to write this out loud as I don't want to jimx us all but... It's not really a feature but I have to say generally speaking this has been a rather stable beta cycle for me for which I'm grateful. I don't use it myself but many are liking the enhancements to #BrailleScreenInput.

  34. In light of the iOS 18 improvements to Braille Screen Input, I tried getting back into it on my iPhone 15 Pro that still runs iOS 17.5.1 release. The problem I have always had with BSI is that my fingers and it somehow never went together well. I normally have no trouble using touch screens, but BSI somehow always alluded me. And it all starts with the fact that the calibration gesture itself seems to fail me more often than it works. And it doesn’t seem to remember well the last way I used BSI, judging from the many dots that get mis-interpreted by my touches once it gets re-engaged. So, is there something I may be missing? Or a special trick to get the finger calibration to work?
