I’m trying to remember a young adult novel I read some time ago. The story is about a girl who suffers from migraines. One day, she sits at a piano, and it mysteriously starts playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata on its own. Each time she returns to the piano, she learns more of the piece, almost as if the piano is teaching her.

The book builds up to her final performance of the Moonlight Sonata, which she plays beautifully. However, after the performance, her migraines return. Does anyone recognise this book? I’d love some help finding the title or author!

Willower: Rewriting Life After Unimaginable Loss, a memoir, is about the power of words, and the need for story and imagination (okay, and maybe a little magic) to survive the worst, most unfathomable loss, the death of a child.

• How does one go on after experiencing unimaginable loss?
• How many years does it take to learn to live again?
• After the loss of a child, how does one find a purpose or a reason to keep going?

In my book, Willower, I give you, the reader, a raw and in-depth look at the fears, joys, and challenges of motherhood. Then the nightmare happens and the grief sets in, and finally, after eleven years, I come to terms with the reality of living without my son Sam (by keeping him, his memory, alive).

I show you what I tried, what I learned, what worked, and what I know now about searching for meaning and migrating through the days living with deep sadness.

This book, I know, is an emotionally difficult one to read. But you’ll also find it’s written in a way (and this is the biggest compliment I’ve been getting) that somehow keeps compelling you to . . . well, keep going, reading.

The ending chapters (10 and 11) will take you deep inside my heart where you, too, will see Sam, and come to realize that yes, the letters are indeed magic.

I know it seems daunting

So start with what’s easy: a rating. Just a tap or a click and you’re done.

It’s no small task to read a book and then to write a meaningful review. Ugh! Believe me, I know the time it can take, and I procrastinate too—and yes, even I agonize over what to write. Writing is hard! The struggle is real.

Maybe now, I thought, if I shared my experience, showed how I was surviving, walking, talking, living, and rewriting my life, my misery, I could help another bereaved parent to feel less alone, and less miserable too.
