  1. Am new to Adult ( and YA) Romance books - only started reading them last year, but I highly recommend :

The Ex Hex (Ex Hex #1) by Erin Sterling

    And the sequel :

    The Kiss Curse
(Ex Hex #2) by Erin Sterling

All the characters are whole ass people who feel like they exist outside the confines of the story.

Their reactions , interactions and motivations make sense

The world building is subtle yet intriguing

The writing is really good !

  2. Having finished The Invisible Library: The Untold Story mere moments ago, going to savour the bittersweetness of the end of a most excellent series and dive into Scarlet (also by Genevieve Cogman) sometime in early 2024.

This book hangover will be a doozy but worth it.

I do so love the journey of having read a great book!

  4. Book 16 (?) prob last 2023 read for me of 2023

The Invisible Library: The Untold Story
    By Genevieve Cogman

Eighth - final - novel in the most excellent series

Enjoying it so much but reading it is bittersweet. Want to finish it but then the series will be ended 😞

Wholehearted recommendation to all modern fantasy fans

Was happy/sad reading penultimate book, even more so with this final one

Gonna be so sad to finish the final book.

  5. Book 15 (?) of 2023

The Invisible Library: The Dark Archive
    By Genevieve Cogman

Seventh novel in the (so far) eight book Invisible Library series

Again - I don't know how these books started off so good and *just keep getting better*.

Wholehearted recommendation to all avid readers.

Author acknowledgements: "If you enjoyed this book then I'm glad. Thank you for letting me tell you a story."

Gonna be so sad to finish the final book

  6. Also, read, enjoyed and seemingly forgotten! 5 more books so current 2023 total stands at 14!

i - The Ex Hex (Ex Hex #1) by Erin Sterling

    ii- The Kiss Curse
(Ex Hex #2) by Erin Sterling

iii - Castle Waiting, Vol. 2 by
    Linda Medley

iv - The Worrier's Guide to Life by Gemma Correll

v- The Firmament of Flame (The Universe After #3) by Drew Williams

Not too shabby considering there have been only 1 'meh' and 1 'blurgh' in entire list. Quality not quantity

  8. Book 8 of 2023: Monstress: Book One (includes issues 1-18 of ongoing comic)

Book 9 of 2023: The End Of All Things, the last book in the main book series of Old Man's War by John Scalzi

Monstress was brain meltingly good but sometimes hard to read (visually maximalist)

The End of All Things was a beautifully crafted ending to a massively scoped series

Would recommend both, warning that both have violent content

Glad I got over my prev (nasty) 'book hangover'

  10. Experienced five excellent books (and one meh) book this year, but the last (seventh) one I read was so bad, it's akin to eating five consecutive five star meals, with the most perfect service, then having McDonalds, and then getting food poisoning.

Last book was a real doozy and (temporarily I hope) soured my reading capacity.

Now I can't focus on any long form fiction for more than around ten minutes.

    🫤😞

  11. Was so unsettled by how much I didn't like a book in a long running series, thought I'd look at reviews to see if the problem was me (not the book)

General consensus seems to be that this book is indeed the worst in the series for precisely the reasons I didn't like it, which is somewhat comforting.

Three books left before series end, I'm skipping one so one more to read before final book and if the next book doesn't improve I might bail uttery 😖

  12. Book 7 (?) August 10th 2023

Finished another book - deeply unsatisfying

Living With The Dead by Kelly Armstrong

Part of Otherworld Women series (Urban Modern Fantasy). Have read all prev books in (13 14?) series, this was the first one that I actively disliked.

Partly it was large ensemble of main characters each chapter is a diff char viewpoint - there's a total of seven (?) characters. To many! Also intense icky adult themes with no advanced warning.

  13. Book 6 May 29th
Old Man's War: The Human Division- John Scalzi book five in Old Man's War series (at least book 5 of full stories and not shorts/novellas)

Really enjoyed this although it felt like it had the biggest 'main cast' of protagonists so far.

    Book 5 February 11th
Saga graphic Novel Volume 11 Covered ongoing comics chapter/issue 55 -60

As the year goes on I apparently read slower and slower :C
