A friend from the #BBS - an old hacker who collected old toys - left me his #Altair when he joined the Navy. That thing I did use quite a bit - but it was still a toy next to the PC as much fun as watching the #blinkenlights was.
I think there's something odd about inherited 8-bit nostalgia - it's like the confluence of the "earlier simpler time" bias combined with this moment where you could build up from basic principles to today so it feels especially much a moment sadly missed.

TL;DR: Some European countries use unencrypted and unauthenticated #longwave radio to steer parts of their renewable power, enough to potentially cause a Europe-wide blackout.
The control signals can be sent with just a #Flipper Zero over short distance, or via self-built transmitters over a long distance (e.g. using a kite to lift an antenna wire).
The system is also used for street lamp control, allowing for a scaled-up “Project #Blinkenlights” art installation that transforms an entire city into a screen (for astronauts).
The company operating this system has threatened us with lawsuits and (now publicly) denies the risk.

Weekend acquisitions. This Teac EQ needs a little work. Looks great cosmetically, but the lower freq. aren't showing on the display -- which works as it 'blips' on power-on.
And took a trip to a local record shoppe on #RecordStoreDay
Wasn't really looking for anything, and this place didn't have lines or crowds when it opened, and it didn't get a whole lot of #RSD stock. I made do since I didn't own a #vinyl copy of Rumors, this works.

@gpowerf Well, it really gives you an idea of just how powerful modern machines are. SIMD is wonderful, but the fact that a classic machine like the #IBM1401 can be simulated in its entirety, computationally and visually, including spinning tapes, card punches and #blinkenlights on a modern laptop, without it breaking a sweat, really brings it home. Same with the #PiDP11.

Finished the #IMSAI 8080 kit build over the weekend. Since the CPU and peripheral devices are virtualized and running on an ESP32, it connects to the wifi and serves up a very nice web-based desktop interface. It also has two physical RS-232 serial ports on the back that can be used to connect physical peripheral devices.

Almost done with assembly of the #PiDP-11 (PDP-11/70 replica) kit. Still waiting for some connectors to arrive from #Adafruit for the back panel that bridge to those on the Pi inside.
Booted up into RSX-11M-PLUS, an OS I haven't touched since high school. As the Pi on the inside is connected to my wifi, I'm able to SSH into the console and login as SYSTEM (lol).
"Last interactive login on Tuesday, March 30, 1982" -- pretty close!

Progress on the #PiDP-11 kit last night.
The Raspberry Pi 3 A+ has been loaded with the #SimH software and various bootable OS images that can run on the PDP-11/70. Connected it to the GPIO interface on the back of the PCB where it will live. Powered it up for a "smoke test" and let it boot into the default "idled" program that runs some patterns on the LEDs.
Then inserted the panel switches and got them soldered in.

I completed the SMD challenge! It was easy up to the 0603 components, but I had to use my binocular microscope after that. I lost the first 0201 LED when trying to flip it over, but thankfully held on to the second one. The 0201 LED was not marked for polarity, so I had to take a best guess looking at the part under the microscope.
