Animal control must be sick of me, with how often they have to drive up here.
I could pick this birdy (unsure if thrush or blackbird) up with my bare hands, he was extremely skinny and as I was holding him he closed his eyes and his head dropped to the side. I thought he was a goner right there and then. But he was still kicking when they came to pick him up, so fingers crossed he makes it through the night.

Vacation Day 1: we stopped to stretch our legs in Barry's Bay and found a distressed loon. It had fishing line wrapped all around its beak and neck and the line extended into the lake dozens of metres. We cut the bird free, gathered and discarded the line and drove 2 hours the wrong direction to get to the nearest wildlife centre. They got the rest of the line out of its beak, throat and stomach and the bird should pass the tiny fragment of hook without issue. We're driving the poor loon back to its lake.
If you fish, PLEASE don't throw fishing line away. It can kill birds.

("Lory" has a backstory. She is a banded rescue bird released back into the wild who chooses to "hang out" near a tourist spot in hopes of scoring some free food. It's a strategy that seems to work for her since everyone knows her.)

I just got back from taking an injured tūī to the Wildlife Hospital at Willowbank in Ōtautahi-Christchurch.
It's a young bird that was found with an injured wing in a back garden in Akaroa township (thought to be from a close encounter with a cat). A retired couple, Patsy and Mike, volunteered to drive it to southwestern Christchurch since they were heading in for a grandchild's school performance. I carried on the journey across the city to the hospital.

This little collared dove was sat on the doorstep that leads to the offices above our shop. I left him/her there for half an hour in the hope the parents would return to it, but it soon began getting attention from passers by and I was worried that the local peregrine would spot it.
I sent this photo to a rescue who said it needed immediate attention. I found a box and off it went. Apparently well but needs feeding up.
The sanctuary is full but helped anyway 💚 #wildlife #BirdRescue -

Ruby Throated Hummingbird
These #birds are so light, it's hard to believe until you have one in your hand. To give you an idea of how little they weigh, this little chap is about to take off from being rescued by Steven from being caught in a spider’s web! On Thursday, January 26, 2023, my friend and New Leaf Journal colleague, Victor V. Gurbo, happened across a distressed pigeon with a large amount of twine tied to one of its feet. This is the story of how Victor, with a little help from me, captured the pigeon and removed entanglements from both of its feet. Photographic evidence of the end result is provided (no photos of the twine, however, since we were preoccupied with said pigeon).
